Taking the skill out of shooting

Post by Baldrick314 » 26 Nov 2013, 2:29 pm

I picked up the latest copy of Rifleshooter and in it there was a story about TrackingPoint guided firearm systems. This system is essentially a rangefinding scope that calculates bullet drop and holdover (nothing new there). Where it gets weird is the system allows you to tag a target and once the scope has worked out where you need to hold it won't let the trigger be pulled until the firearm is in the correct position. I can understand this technology for military use for engaging targets at extremely long range but it's also being marketed for sporting use. The fun in hunting/ target shooting is having the skills to do so, not having a computer do all the work for you.

This is the website for TrackingPoint: http://tracking-point.com/precision-guided-firearms

Fascinating technology, but dead boring to shoot I reckon.

Especially how you just hold the trigger and it fires when you move the reticle over the target.

Extremely boring. Plus if it just lets the trigger go I'd imagine you wouldn't exactly get a smooth trigger pull so I wonder if it compensates for that

Don't even have to pull the trigger yourself :(

Until you've cast your own bullets, made your own lube, loaded your own cartridges, had the trigger time to work out the most accurate loads and can use iron sights you don't know the "arte and fcience" of gunnery"!

What about the bloke shooting pests for a living? Just because you don't perceive the need doesn't mean there isn't one.

All technology moves on as time goes by, I remember fullbore shooters bagging out match rifle and F class as not being proper shooting.

Outside of military (which is obviously irrelevant for us here) that's a good point.

If you're getting paid on results and buying your own ammo, you don't want to miss much.

This is my thought too. If you're doing it for a living you'd be good enough to hit what you're aiming for out to acceptable distances. I would think most pro shooters would only shoot at targets within a range that they knew they could hit, not bother trying to shoot pests a mile away. The only civilian use I can see for this is people who want to shoot at really long ranges without putting in the time to learn to do so.

You still need to be able to estimate down range wind, not just what is at the rifle.

It doesn't compensate wind, just drop

Well, um, sorta.....yes! I do actually have a 1/3 scale (working ) medieval trebuchet that stands 7ft high at the throwing arm's axle and throws 20cm concrete balls clear across the paddock. Must try and get the video of it onto Youtube.
