When I was an apprentice boilermaker in the '80's, I remember the politics of the day all too well because you couldn't escape it.
The Unions under Hawke had limitless power, and I saw wages and conditions improving, but then they became drunk on power and there were strikes every month.
Over time, and many people forget this aspect, it became too expensive to make things in Australia and some people ruined it for everyone.
Also, in the frenzy to blame John Howard for everything (and I hate the man over his decision to react to his own out-of-control emotions and enact Labor's pre-written gun laws) people get something VERY wrong.
It was Labor and Hawke who stuffed us all by removing tariffs on all the stuff we imported here and destroyed the great things we made here, and subsequent govts of both commo and conservative never fixed it.
I remember at the time, WTF?
Why are we doing this? I could not see how this could ever end well, even as a 2nd year apprentice at 16. The tradesmen that were teaching us were baying for blood and always wanted to strike over stupid things, even though they never got paid to be off work. Marriages and homes were lost over striking about silly things.
AND, although anyone would be a fool not to use the benefits from this or risk being run over by the economy, making the purchase of a second or more family home a tax benefit has destroyed this ever being a reality for almost all young folk, and actually ruined the whole system.
