My Camera Tripod Shooting Rest

Post by bigfellascott » 04 Dec 2014, 4:28 pm

Here's the Camera Tripod Rest I made today - Took about 10mins and she was done. I got a piece of 3mm Aluminium Plate from the Engineering place down the road (they gave me it for nothing and cut it to size) :D it measures 240mm long by 100mm wide, then then went home and found dead centre, drilled the hole to suit the tripod attachment, then measured 50mm in from each end, drew a line and then put that plate into my vice and proceeded to bend it using a piece of wood and hammer, repeated the process on the other end and she was ready to mount the attachment too.

I will trim the bolt I used and also put some Styrofoam to put on the base to cover up the bolt completely this eliminating any chance if it damaging the sand filled bag (made from old jean legs) I'll also round the sharp edges off to eliminate any damage that could come from that.

There's plenty of flexibility in the Camera tripod too, with the 3 diff leg lengths being fully adjustable to any length and configuration so will be hand off the sides of some of the hills I shoot on too I would imagine, the head is completely adjustable from up/down side to side and rotates 360 deg so plenty of flexibility there too.

The little base plate that came with the Tripod is very quick to attach and remove so packing up will be a breeze also. I can use it whilst sitting on the ground and standing up and sitting down if I wish so plenty of flexibility there too.

Anyway I'll let you know how it goes when I get out and test it on some bunnies (which is what its for - just snipping little ol bunnies.

It should cost ya SFA if you can get the Tripod for bugger all (seen a few lately at garage sales for $10! then its just a matter of getting some Aluminium Sheet etc like what I did, very simple to make and as I said took SFA time to do.

Have a crack mate, I think you'll be surprised at how easy it is too make ;)

That Tripod of mine was $55 from memory (was $110) but got it on special at hardly normals so I'm still $110 plus shipping in front of that one you were looking at :D

Could check out Gumtree and this weekends garage sales.

Hey, Bigfellascott, are we going to see the stool modified to include a couple of coffee cup holders and Esky to keep the milk cold?

I actually checked this brand out when I was down in the Launceston G.S. at Tassie the other week. It was only a Bipod but at $198., just too expensive for me. It looked really well built and the trigger release was a great idea. It operated one or both legs for uneven ground.

Cheers,

Just got around to having a geek at it,,, after you sayin about it.
Bloody fantastic mate.
Like all real good inventions,,,,,,, So simple that nobody thought of it,, till the inventor. Bravo 8-)

Just for you and "all the others now busily copying",, For the foam padding, go to Cunnings  and get a roll of that grey foam the builders and plumbers wrap around posts and pipes before pouring the concrete.

Its cheap, and comes in different widths.
One roll lasts me for ages, and I use it for all manner of things.
Ideal for your tripod platform Scott.
Its easily cut with scissors or stanley knife,, glues well with most adhesives (contact etc),, and is pretty tough and resilient for this type of application.
I used it on the platform of my swivel shooting chair (still yet to be finished)
:D

Stuff the styro foam,,,,, its too squeaky.
You'd be calling foxes without realizing it,,,,,
And frightening them off at other times.

A piece of an old towel or tea-towel rolled up, tape it in place should work.

Its what ive used in my tree branch shooting stick and wrapped the forestock like this for resting on fences & stuff. Works ok.

She's all done, thought I might duck out and give the corners and bolt a trim with the grinder and a quick file and that was sorted, as I sat there looking around I spotted a Blue Dish Washer upper thingy and though that should fit, and it did, all I have to do is bung the ol jeans sandbag on top and she's good to go :D

Job done, now to take it and and hammer some bunnies

Yep got the same problem here mate, last time I was out with Harb the spots I normally like to shoot were unshootable really (got lucky with one that was willing to sit on a warren) but you just couldn't see SFA as the grass was a good FT or more long in places, so we headed down to another part of the property that isn't usually worried by that sort of thing and got luck down there (thank god) or she would have been a quite little shooting trip. :D

I reckon that setup will work fine, I might stick the sponge down with some Double Sided Tape and it should be spot on then.

With spring and the sprouting grass,, it helps if you change tactics a bit. 8-) 8-)
Where I used to shoot in Vic, there was a creek (mostly dry in summer) that ran for approx 1 klm through the property.
As usual the banks were riddled with burrows.
Come spring time or no stock, the feed used to get up to near waist height in places.
But,,,,, there was always a band approx 3 or 5 meters wide running alongside the creek on either side that the rabbits kept bare all year round.
I change tactics by,,, going to a .22 lr and subsonics,,, good matching camo head to foot including face veil,,, and setting up in the edge of the long stuff but also so I could see along the creek for at least 150 to 200 meters.
Just lay and wait in the aft sun, and pick em off.
Eventually when no more are coming out,, just quietly relocate a bit further along, and start all over again.
It was while doing precisely that, one evening that I nailed 3 foxes in as many minutes that were following the creek and coming towards me.

Simple,,, relaxing,,, and very successful.
:D :D
