Biggest legal rifle?

Post by NukeBOMB88 » 06 Dec 2014, 9:31 pm

Hey guys ,

Do you think it would be considered legal to have a 20mm rifle? I'm not ever going to own one but would it even be legal ? If not the the 20mm then what's the biggest rifle one could own?
Thanks,
Nuke :D

By definition it would(should) be a Category B firearm which you should be able to.

The old military appearance catch-all is the one that might stop you.

Hmm I wonder if it would be possible to make a wooden stock for a 20mm rifle so that you can beat the military appearance laws?

20mm Vulcan is doable in NSW but the ammo / projectiles are the issue and will require a permit from the Govenors office.

That said there is such a rifle as the Anzio Ironworks 50/20 rifle which is a 20mm Vulcan necked down to 50BMG. These are legal and there's a few in the country already but be prepared for the rather large upfront cost. Expect about $17k for bare rifle as you'll get nailed on export permits, duties, GST, customs fees, dealer fees etc etc. Add another $7-10k to purchase optics, mounts, brass, dies to form the brass, dies to reload, projectiles etc etc and your about $20k outta pockect to get that first shot outta the way.

The first 100 rounds of Barrett 416 I made and loaded cost me just under $3K not counting labour but it's a one off cost that I'll recover over time.

Save ya money, spend $15k for a McMillan Tac 50 complete with scope, mounts, reloading kit and 100 rounds and you'll be muchbetter off financially and it's an easier gun to use.

Could you use wood for such a heavy recoiler? :ugeek:

Wondering how long it would last before splitting.

Good point schink , it mightn't last long but at least it'd be considered legal (maybe)

Well actually....

The wording on the Victoria PTA is "You must indicate full calibre details eg. 223REM, 303BRITISH."

Now seeing as they list cartridge names you could assume they mean what cartridge the rifle is chambered for.

But... Literally they have asked for the calibre (it's in bold and underlined in the form and everything), not the cartridge. You can honestly and accurately write that it's only a .22 ;)

I say you're in with a chance Nuke

You may want to rethink your math cause 20mm is actually .78125 Cal. This may just slip past if they're not that switched on with their math as well.

Nah, I was talking about the .22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer Brett.

It might be necked down from a boomer but it's truly a .22 calibre as the PTA requests ;)

The loudenboomer is based on the 378Webbery is it not?

Either way, yes, the PTA refers to the calibre then gives the chambering example, I shake my head each time I read it but frankly, 98% of shooters dont know the difference between calibre and chambering so why would the police licensing brach(es) who are, lets be honest, far from experts!!

Yes, its 22 calibre, but they would still send the form back with a return address envelope, requesting the full calibre details (cut them a break!)

I would say 0.22 ELB, what is it, well, if you dont know then why are you working for the Licensing & Regulation Division, or whatever they are known by today, used to be LSD but for some reason changed their name!

I've always wanted a Weatherby since I was 15 and shot a relatives .257 Weatherby Magnum. It was my dream gun back then and I don't know why I've got several GBV's but no Weatherby. I did see a guy blown outta his thongs by a 460, the bastard nearly killed me as I almost choked laughing :)

Yep, necked .378 Weatherby Magnum to .22.

As far as I know it was only ever for fun and they were trying to set a record of launching a pill at 5,000 or 5500 FPS. Something around that.

Fell a few hundred FPS short though as the bullet wouldn't hold together AFAIK.

I wonder how heavy the rifle has to be to safely chamber the Eargesplitten Loudenboomer?

Burning all that powder through such a tiny neck, the pressure spike must be massive. Must have a heavy as action and barrel.

I Googled but couldn't find pictures :(
