Sako 85 Bavarian Carbine

Hi guys,

I was at my LGS today and a Sako 85 Bavarian Carbine caught my eye.

This is the beauty...

I tell ya, after getting my hands on it, I looove the rifle.

I've read a lot of people giving the full length stock crap for excess weight, or floating issues, but I reckon they've never touched the thing.

Amazing rifle to hold IMO.

The weight is a mildly valid point...

Anyone who doesn't like this rifle doesn't deserve to shoot though ;)

If I had the money... In a heartbeat

I had to stretch pretty thin to get my Sako 85.

If another one appears in the house my lady will use it on me

Are they floated or is it bedded the whole way down?

They're floated.

(Or they're supposed to be anyway, a little trimming might be needed as it often is...)

Not really my thing but I can see where it could be handy.

It would let you prop your rifle on anything without worrying about pressuring the barrel, good for those dense Bavarian forests I guess?

I dunno

I was in town and looking at one of these in Abela's Gunshop in Thornbury this morning in 9.3x62.

They are a sweet rifle for sure.

I am a hopeless case for Mannlicher stocks.

I have one in 243W topped with a Zeiss scope in optilocks.

It's a bit longer in the length of pull than my ruger RSI but being taller that's a good thing.

No problems with accuracy as you would expect from Sako.

Heavy on the coin but well worth the investment.

That's the one complaint for them from me :(

I took a look at one after using Tikka which fit me perfectly, but the length of pull on them is just too long for me :(

That's just for me personally though, now knocking the stock. If the butt plate was an inch shorter they'd be perfect for me.

I would dearly love an 85 in 30-06 too but am hearing that you need to mount the scope very high or ejected brass pings off the scope.

I have read the same, though I would stress that it was in the same context as you, "I heard..." and not from shooters who own one.

See here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GH7WIrvwPU

Sako Bavarian in .308, ejects 3 cartridges perfectly with clearance to spare and as you can see the front objective is mounted about as close to the action as it's going to get.

I've been a hairs breadth from buying one too from a colleague at my LGS who is a straight shooter on these matters. If there is a problem with item X he'll tell me straight up. He's never mentioned the ejection problem and has a safe full of 85's and T3's.

If you are seriously considering and have the money available, I say go for it.
See you on the firing line.

I've also read people say there were no ejection problems in the 75 and models before, it was just the 85 where it apparently developed.

Mine is the same as the youtube video Aster link. Never so much as a glance on the scope.

A lot of European rifles have this problem!!! I have 2 Anschutz rifles in .22 that ping the brass of the scope religiously and it doesn't seem to be a problem at all!!!!

My Model 85 6.5x55 has no problem with ejected brass hitting the scope (a 1" Swarovski 4X mounted low). In my experience its a myth.

View out the window. Its hard to see in the photo but the snow on either side of the driveway is well above the roof of the truck and more is coming down right now. Temp. is around -25C. not taking into account the wind chill. So I guess I'm not going to the range today.

Hi Lorgar have a 1416 with the varmint barrel with the 64 action and a 1712 Silhouette with the 54 action both great shooters but yep as normal the brass flies up hits the scope and lands back in the action on say every third shot :x
