Permit to shorten a rifle in NSW?

Post by Goshawk » 30 Dec 2014, 9:49 am

Hi all,

Do I need to 'first' get a permit to shorten a rifle barrel before I take it to a gunsmith to bed shorten in NSW?

Cheers

No, the gunsmith will ensure the rifle over all length and barrel length remain legal length.

No permit but if I remember right it has to be done by a smith? I think in NSW anyway.

You can't do it yourself, smith has to verify it and I think informs the registry of a change.

(Haven't done it myself but that's what I remember being written on here before when someone else was doing it)

You can do it yourself as long as you remain at legal length, both barrel length and over all length. I checked this with my smith before I did it.

The only time you must have it done by a gunsmith is when the rifle goes under the legal minimums. For example if you need to shorten and recrown a barrel that's already on the limit. The smith will then submit a form noting that the firearm has been modified outside the length limits

Shortened and switch barrels needs to be done by a competent gunsmith if you don't want to void insurance on a range (NRAA anyway).

Switch barrel voids your insurance? How're you supposed to change on the range then if you want to shoot a different cartridge :|

I don't have one, but sucks if you do...

That's interesting.

I wonder how much shorter they'd let you go. Over the years you could need it done multiple times if it's a roughly treated rifle I guess.
