It's not as simple as that . What is best for you may not suit the other guy.

The best way to use a forum like this is to ask a single specific question after giving some background on , how you will use the gun , in what conditions , terrain etc and on what type of game

There are many classes and types of guns all used for different reasons so to answer your several questions with no other input would take a book , So why don't you start with the 243 question and give us a run down on what you would use the 243 for .

That way you get more specific answers to that one question and less confusion.

Later ask the other questions in the same way .

I'll save south west saying it you will want three 30-06s because they do EVERYTHING!!! :sarcasm:

In all seriousness that's a good combo just throw in a cheap 22 and you're set

At least get his handle correct (and there is a great deal of handling with her/him)  :

But yes OP, you need to narrow down your query, best in what respect; perceived accuracy, portability durability....

But if you're new to shooting, a 22 rimfire for cheap plinking, a 12g shotty, a do-all centrefire like a 308win, cheapish plentiful ammo supply, something a bit smaller, 223 or even a 243, then something a bit bigger .....

It seems a pretty simple answer to me, I presume it is for hunting.

Pushing calibres aside the Howas are best value for money rifle in my humble opinion but a TIKKA is better. A howa and a scope can be had for well under $1000

Shotguns? well any of the new breed of Turkish guns seem okay from what I see and a 28" or 30" barrel with chokes can be had for well under $1000, for a little bit more you could have a Lanber or something a bit better.

Good luck, for what it is worth I have a .300WM and in my opinion a .30/06 is just as good for hunting and in all honesty a .308 isn't far behind. A .300 is hard on barrels and more rifle than you need for many things(but nice to have if you do need it) and as 1290 said a .308 is cheap to run..

Good luck.

Good choice, in my very humble opinion a .303 will do pretty much everything a .308 will do, at hunting ranges, perhaps not as accurate as a .308 but if sorted properly it won't be far off.

Disclaimer: I am a bit biased when it comes to .303's.

I like my Tikkas. They are generally very accurate out of the box and for the quality and accuracy they're reasonably priced, IMO.

I'm assuming with the cartridge choices here the .243 will be a varmint and small game gun while the .300wm will be the large game gun (duh).

If you're looking at buying new...

A Tikka T3 Lite is about $1,000. Less if you get a Lite with a synthetic stock, more if you get a model with a walnut stock.

Putting a Leupold VX-1 3-9x40mm on your .300wm will cost you about $300.

A VX1 4-12x on the .243 for a bit more magnification for varminting is about $400.

Call it $1,400 per rifle average to do it all new. Second hand could be done 25% cheaper or whatever.

My 2c. Will leave the shotgun advice to someone more in the know.

That is a lot of gun for a new shooter jjcasey.

Starting off on too larger cartridge many people find they develop a flinch which is hard to shake later even on smaller ones.

.243 is a decent centrefire starter though, and will still let you do plenty of hunting while you're getting used to things.

Bit off topic but I'd suggest maybe you start with something like that before you get behind the .300wm.

Back in the day my second centrefire was a 300winmag..... I never developed a flflflflinch....

Seriously, doesnt matter, I say shoot it. shoot it a lot (mostly off the bench) then somewhere in all that fun'n'games learn how to shoot it properly and you'll be right. Test for a flinch by getting a mate to put a dummy round in the mag for you..... Once you're used to the 300 the 243 will feel like a 22

Don't be intimidated, the points above are valid but it's not like it takes years of practice on smaller stuff to get prepared for the larger ones.

A couple of trips to the range, a few shots on something smaller, have a few shots on something bigger and see how you're feeling.

Could be just fine.
