New rifle - Mod 70 Featherweight .243

Post by headspace » 29 Jan 2015, 7:46 pm

I was up in Brisbane the other day and not being a regular visitor to the big smoke thought I'd go look at a gun store. I went to Queensland Gun Exchange and nearly swooned as I walked in the door.

Anyway, I was poking around and one of the sales blokes came over and asked if he could help. I said I'd like to have a look at one of the Mod 70 Featherweights they had there in 243W. He got it out and handed it over and I could feel my wallet jumping around in my pocket.

Eventually I gave in decided to buy it. Let me say it's sculpture in walnut and blued metal. PTA is in.

Also, my heavy barrel 223 is going on the market to make room in the safe.

Saw the .223 in the classifieds.

Thanks mate, I put a fair bit into the rifle and it's been great. Just find I'm more and more into classic hunting rifles, plus I've always loved a mod 70.

Mate I ended up doing OK. My LGS is Pro Hunt in Lismore and I've known Brad for a fair while. I went in to get the PTO going and he got on the phone to QGE and ordered the rifle from them. Apparently they do a lot of business together.

I think that these day after many years including half of 1290's avatar my shoulder is happier without a 375. I just got finished reading a book by a bloke called Karamojo Bell. He shot numerous elephant in the years before WW1 and he shot nearly all of them with a 7x57 Mauser. All head shots too. He got the name "karamojo" from the areas he did most of his hunting in what is now known as Kenya and Uganda. His opinion was that you shoot more accurately with a rifle that is comfortable to shoot, and is therefore more accurate because you can shoot it enough to get really good with it. Of course Elmer Keith would have scoffed at this. By the way most of his kills were head shot and usually one bullet did it. a 170gn round nose solid.

Once you're fully licensed about 2weeks maximum mate, not as good as Vic though, but better than SA and WA.

I got my rifle today, Brad and his son Mitch at pro Hunt in Lismore did a great job of mounting the Vortex 4-12 on it and managed to scrounge up some Lee dies as well. Got some Winchester 80gn factory to shoot tomorrow at the range, then the handloading will begin. Target species will be Fallow and maybe some goats. If a dog gets in the way it will be in bother too.
Cheers boys,

Thanks for that Tim, I'm a confirmed 270 operator too. Love that cartridge. Mines a Montana ASR, I was going to get another mod 70 Sporter but couldn't find one so went to a Montana. I just saw that Featherweight and knew it had to go to a good home.

I saw it at QGE mate, but when I spoke my LGS about having it transferred to them they did a deal with QGE and I ended up saving myself about $50. Apparently my blokes do a lot of business with QGE. Good store too by the way. One benefit of living in the big smoke.
