Removing lead - Lead Away active ingredient?

Post by bluerob » 26 Feb 2015, 8:04 am

Yeas ago, I used a product called Lead Away. Got back into guns and couldn't find any, but, then found a good supplier.

Anyone know what the active ingredient would be? I'm not looking to make my own, but, this stuff is incredible in removing crud from cylinder faces, crud around the forcing cone etc.

You can run a patch soaked with whatever liquid you use, patch and patch until clean, then, run the lead remover patch through and it's like WTF is that stuff coming out now? It looks as though you hadn't even cleaned the barrel when a lead remover patch is used.

There's 2 different brands that I know of, but, they both seem to have "the stuff" that just wipes crud off.

I have a vague memory that it's a Kleen Bore product maybe .

Ammonium Oleate is the ingredient in most lead removal products.

Try that for a start.

If you could find the materials data safety sheet , MSDS for the product it might say what's in it .

Yep. Thanks. Interesting reading.

I'm not really that keen on making my own as such. I was just intrigued as to how effective this stuff is (Kleenbore and Birchwood Casey both make some). Reloading scares me enough without trying a chemical lab out.

As I say, you run a wet patch of whatever your favorite juice is (most are labelled as lead removing also), patch a few times and the last patch comes out clean. You think your barrel is clean.

Run a lead remover patch through and it comes out looking at those it's been hiding 4.5 yards up someone's back passage.

I've been looking for the MDSS, but, nothing yet.

Thanks for the replies and comments, much appreciated.

You can buy these in patch form also instead of cutting the sheet up.

I use David Bailey Shooting Supplies to buy my stuff - excellent service and reasonable pricing.

Always seems to be one last grain of fouling that wasn't washed out :problem:
