Tikka Extended Magazine

Post by Hunter » 27 Nov 2013, 7:31 am

Hi,
I am looking to buy a Tikka Extended Magazine (5 rounds) for my .270. They are about $120 here in Australia but I notice they seem to be half price (even less) over in the US. Can anyone recommend any online stores for buying accessories like magazines cheaply and reliably? Postage to Australia would obviously be nice but I can work around it if thats not possible.

Also, is it legal to import a magazine? Its not a major gun part but I don't know every single gun law... To me its just a bit of plastic so shouldn't be an issue but there are stranger laws...

Thanks!

It's legal, but it's controlled.

You have to do the paperwork and get permission. Customs 709 form I think it is?

Mate you need a permit to import almost every single thing to do with firearms. Even empty brass or projectiles, doesn't even have to be ammo.

Same for barrels, magazines, even stocks get seized...

B709 is the form.

To Hunter: I posted links to the form earlier here - viewtopic.php?f=10&t=652#p5042

Some other information there too which should help.

Ask away if you're still stuck though.
See you on the firing line.

Thanks for the info! If it turns out to be too difficult/time consuming to import it, can anyone recommend a cheap Australian store that I could get it from?

Also, I just thought why not go bigger? What is the maximum magazine capacity that is legal for a centrefire rifle in Australia? Does anyone know where I can get a Tikka magazine with a capacity larger than 5?

How long does the process take from the time of submitting a b709a form to actually getting it approved and being allowed to import it? Is there a cost involved in this? I tried ringing customs but after being on hold for 25 minutes someone hung up on me!

Usually less than 2 weeks. No cost.

Oh thats surprisingly good! Can anyone tell me what the actual process is? I fill out a form and submit it to customs... Do they give me an approval notice that has to be included with the magazine when it is posted into Australia? or do they just seize it when it comes in and then I have to prove that I have permission? I don't really have a clue how it works?

You submit your forms and get the approval in the mail 2 weeks later or whatever.

Include it with your order and the supplier should include it with the shipment so there are no problems.

If something does get lost and customs seize something addressed to you, you'll get a letter in the mail saying "we have seized xxxxxx....." and so on.

If that happened you'd obviously just supply a copy of your approved permit and could then should be able to pick it up.

Thanks for the info. I heard somewhere that because my rifle only came with a 3 shot magazine I am only ever allowed to have a 3 shot magazine. If I put in one of a higher capacity, it would be considered modifying the rifle which is illegal without permission from the attorney general's office. This sounds stupid to me because I can go and get a five round magazine from my local gun store and I'm pretty sure thats not illegal. Is there any truth to that at all?

I'm 99% sure that's wrong.

You're allowed to have up to a 10 shot mag. You're original permit might specify three, but at most all you should have to do is call your licensing department and update your details.
