I never knew bullets can make a difference. How do you tell?
The type of ammunition makes a huge difference. Comes down to a number of factors....
Higher quality ammunition will typically have more uniform weight/shape projectiles.
More consistent powder charges in each cartridge.
More uniform brass.
.22lr isn't effected to these extremes as it's such a small projectile but for example cheaper .30 cal projectile weight can vary by +/- 3-4 grains.
Buy a box cheap "150gr" projectiles and they could be a mix of anything from about 146gr - 154gr. Over distance that has an increasing effect on drop and a change in point of impact/accuracy. Over a few hundred metres one could be hitting 6"- 7" lower than the other even though they're out of the same box. (Guestimate there but you get the idea).
As well as that, some rifles and ammo just don't sync together. What shoots great in one rifle may be terrible in another and vice versa.
The same applies for your .22lr and factory ammo. One type might shoot 1" groups, another will shoot 3" groups.
And as bentaz said, just because it's expensive is no guarantee it will shoot well in your rifle. The cheap stuck might do better. The only way to know is to try.
If you can find people with the same rifle and what ammo has shot well for them that's not a bad start though.
