Easy to underestimate the cost of a good rifle

Post by ghunther » 19 Dec 2013, 8:27 am

Hi all,

I'm thinking about getting a dedicated target rifle, and picked up a copy of an old SSAA mag which had a review of the TRG-42 it in.

Started reading away anyway, and it got a good wrap. I like Sako and know they aren't cheap, but it stuck with me and decided to have a better look at one.

I had braced myself for a $3500ish price tag... So wrong

About $6,000 as it turns out, well, well above my budget.

So yeah, hopes are dashed

Grrr.

Underestimated indeed.

Some of their sporters are $3500, forget about their 'tactical' stuff :P

What do you call a 'TARGET' rifle? Do you want some kind of "Factory" bolt action repeater or something that really shoots? Good rifles aren't cheap!

You would be hard pressed to find a Benchrest rifle that cost $6000 to build! What kind of "target " shooting do intend to do?

shoot "F" class std and open and none of my rifles have cost more than $1500 and have won prize meetings and State Championships with them! A good action i.e. trued Rem, Musgrave, Omark with a barrel adapter fitted with a Maddco Barrell will out shoot ANY factory gun ie Sako, Tikka or' remchester' no matter how many thousands you spend on it!

Iv seen some big dollar rifles that are simply just everyday remington actions with a nice barrel and stock atached.

Save yourself thousands and grabb yourself an off the shelf Remington 700... and spend a little money on floating, beding ecg. thats my 2 cents worth.

Some of the custom Remington's are out of control.

Like you said - factory 700 action, stick it in a "tactical" stock (increases cool factor by a level of 10 fonzies) and put a Nightforce scope it on.

Suddenly it's a "tactical cool super long range mega rifle" and costs double the price of the components put into it.

Rifles get more accurate the more picatinny rails you ad to them, right?

I looked up (knowing full well I couldn't afford or have one) the Steyr HS-50 after it was talked about here.

A tidy $10,600 for one

A man can dream though...

For off the shelf target rifles.... savage.

Unless you 'need' a Sako. Alternatively, go for the Rem 700 so you can have the honour of spending more money on it to make it shoot.

Awww, c'mon. I love my CDL and it shoots fine :P

More accessories than anything else on the market for it, though. Someone's making plenty of scratch selling aftermarket bits for them to tonnes of people, you're right about that.
