22 barrel heat and down time

Post by boolia » 29 Dec 2013, 6:36 pm

Hi guys,

I've been shooting with a mate for a little while on his .308.

The barrel heats up pretty quick, a dozen shots or something and it's pretty hot. I'm not much of a shot at the moment but his groups get worse with the heat and he has to give the rifle a rest.

My groups can't get much worse at the moment

Do 22's handle the same? I'm thinking of a 22 benchrest rifle for my first. Do they heat up and need down time too cool down anywhere near the same as the .308?

I know there is a lot less powder burning obviously, but don't know how much of a difference it makes from experience.

Thanks guys.

A 22 won't be anything like it at all mate.

Far, far less barrel heat.

Unless you're shooting at a berserk rate you won't need to give it a rest.

You're only burning a fraction of the powder and generating none of the heat.

You'll laugh when you see the difference after asking ;)

They never get too hot to touch. Nothing like a .308. Simply not enough powder/pressure happening to do it.

Having a waxed bullet helps. Bullet velocity is very slow as well.

Yep. You're talking 1050 - 1200 fps for typical 22LR ammo.

Compared to 2300 - 2800 fps or so depending on your .308 bullet weight and load.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Good to know. Always annoyed at the range to wait for things to cool down on the .308

Sounds like 22 will be the rifle for me :D

You've got your answer but just to add to that...

I should 240 rounds tonight in about 3 hours and the barrel never got above just being warm.
