Scope selection help please

Post by bear foot bowhunter » 19 Jan 2014, 3:25 pm

Hi everyone,

I am looking at getting a vortex viper HS-T but have only found one on line store that stocks it and it is only the SFP model.

Has any one used the HS-T or HS-LR , any feed back would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Is there actually an FFP model? I've been looking at another forum and the way they where talking it sounded like there isn't?

There are FFP models, dunno what the other forum is talking about...

As an example... http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/vor ... ad-reticle

Pull down the drop down and their are 3 FFP models listed there.

More in other series of scopes...
What is this "too many rifles" you speak of?

Tough to offer any help without knowing a little more.

What rifle are you shooting on?

What's the purpose of the scope? Hunting or Target?

Budget?

Give us a bit of info and we'll give you some feedback.
See you on the firing line.

Given the op is looking for a FFP scope I'm hoping its a hunting scope. FFP reticles are IMHO nearly useless for target shooting or long range hunting as the reticle tends to be simply too thick at higher magnifications. Although they may have their place on tactical rifles shooting at targets at unknown distances I don't believe they have as much use for hunting as many would believe. Long range hunting generally required first round hits, not the ability to quickly make hold off/over adjustments for follow up shots like a scout may do when suppressing an enemy position

They're not really my cup of tea either, for anything really.

Some people like them though, hence my question to OP.

point taken aster, perhaps i worded my reply poorly.

what i mean is that the op should consider the application of FFP scopes carefully and even borrow one or shoot someones scope before investing his hard earned.

there has been a lot of hype about the advantages of FFP but rarely any balance to the discussion. i borrowed a vortex pst with a FFP reticle a while back and quickly realised than when trying to load test on a target at 200m on 24X that the reticle completely covered the point of aim and existing holes and that the mil dot reticle at it's most magnified completely dominated the image making it feel cluttered

of course the op is free to buy anything he likes just like anything else don't buy the hype without trying it

It's going on a remy 700 SPS tactical .308, for fun target, the occasional hunt and possibly varminting.

My plane was to build an all round rifle, and reload ammo to suit my needs. I looked at the Ruger Gunsight Scout and love the ideA but not the execution. Now I have the new rifle I just love it.

I considered the viper PST 6-24 but don't like the idea of having electricals in a magour component of my rifle (first thing to go if moisture or dust gets in to it)

Would the vortex EBR-1 or 2 be any good?

For any of those purposes I wouldn't go with a first focal plane reticle scope.

It will just get in your way IMO.

The seals on reputable scopes like the Vortex are pretty good. As long as you treat it well and take care of it I wouldn't worry so much about moisture problems.

+1 for the EBR from me. I shoot a mates now and then on his bench Remmy and it's great.

You can import scopes no problem. You don't need a permit or anything, just shipped in like any regular item.

And they're not restricted by ITAR on the USA side.

No worries.

Nothing milliradians is shortened to mill or mrad

Edit: and yes there are tactical service matches held a couple of time a year at Canberra rifle club.

The Bonzer imports guy seems good. I know two guys who've ordered 3-4 scopes from him in the past.

Which direction to you run out of windage in? Up or down?

Bore sighting only a real rough setup done forget.. you could bore sight it and still be a foot of target.

Have you tried sighting it in at the range, shooting? Or just bore sight only at the moment?

If you haven't shot it, you might find you still have plenty of adjustment.

If you can clearly see that the scope is on at a sidewards angle you've got a problem.

Either your rings aren't install properly and are possibly twisted. Otherwise it's possible that the received has been drilled/tapped incorrectly. If this is the case you need to return it to the store for a replacement.

If it's a matter of up/down you can use shims to prop the front or back of the scope as required to adjust the elevation to a suitable angle. Side to side though you need it replaced (assuming there is something incorrect with the rifle itself, and not just an error in mount the scope).
