Sako A7 magazine problems

Hi guys,

I've read at other places about the Sako A7 and some comments have touched on "magazine problems" with them but didn't say what they actually are.

I thought it was the same as the Tikka which has no reported problems?

Can someone tell me what they're likely going on about?

I haven't used the A7 mags myself for any appreciable length of time but I'm told by a learned colleague at my LGS that it's due to the metal lips on the mag.

Rather than the solid plastic mag like the Tikka the metal lips on the Sake are connected by 2-3 rivets or whatever it is to the plastic bag.

These joins wear out and the lips comes loose.

This is the problem as I understand it.

I've read bad reports on feeding issues too.

Cartridges popping out of the magazine unexpectedly. Magazines popping out of the action. Cartridges springing out stopping cycling the rifle too.

Just not quite solid enough.

Forgot to say, seems to be the longer cartridges which have the magazine problems too.

.270 Win, 300 Win Mag and so on.

Doesn't seem to be as much of an issue with the shorter cartridges.

I had a look at the A7 on the weekend and had this in mind.

Looking at the mag it doesn't inspire confidence I must say. I can see how lips would wear out quickly.

I wonder why they changed, didn't do anything the solid Tikka magazines doesn't as far as I could see.

A replacement 5 shot for my .22 is about $150 from Anschutz

It wouldn't be the first time someones made an "Improvement" only to find it didn't quite work how they'd envisaged. I'm sure they'll get it right eventually though.

But late but just found this in the SSAA mag for you guys about the metal lips.

The magazine of the A7 is polymer with steel lips inserted, which allows the mags to flex so you can load the magazine through the action, like the Sako 85s. This is an innovative concept and one of the common criticisms of the Tikka T3 range of rifles.

So top loading it... Except they half assed it and made things worse

Should have copied a Hawkeye instead
