G’day Shooters

Picked up the cheap 22lr with iron sights for a bit of fun but forgot my eyesight isn’t what it was when I last shot iron sights
Rookie error as it was 40 years ago.
Have the Savage Mk11 with scope so that’s covered interested in trying Red Dot.
Gun was $480 so don’t won’t do go crazy with optic.
Anyone have experience with the Tasco 1x30 MOA only $100 or there abouts
My theory is it’s like iron sights for the old guys!
I’m short sighted so see the sights great but see stuff all of the target out side 25 yds.
Thoughts?

Had a Tasco red dot for my Henry lever action 22lr.

In moderate to bright daylight it was a struggle, and was roughly the size of a small dinner plate covering the target. Ended up getting a cheap ebay 2-7 scope.

I've got some holo and red dot sights. I don't think any of them are suitable for a .22 as they don't have the precision for accurate shots on small game.
The holo is probably better as it is has finer reticles but the red dot reticle is huge. One advantage these sights have is unlimited eye relief, so you can fit them onto firearms that are otherwise difficult to scope.
I have a red dot which is a Chinese copy of the Tasco 1x30 with a 5MoA reticle. A 5MoA dot covers 75mm at 50m. Compare that to my Bushnell scopes with their .25MoA-thick crosshair (3.5mm at 50m).

I’ve got a Bushnell First Strike reflex sight on my Ruger American. It works great for me and I have no problems plinking an 8” plate at 100m. They’re around $100. Not sure how it’ll go with your eyes :unknown:

I'd be surprised if you couldn't hit an 8" plate at 100m, with open sights, offhand.
I guess an 8" plate at 100m is sufficiently accurate for cheap training for deer hunting.
Your Ruger should be shooting under 50mm groups at 100m without too much effort on your part.

 well, I did say “plinking”. If you can achieve 50mm groups at 100m with a 5 MOA red dot with zero magnification, then you’re a better shot than I’ll ever be! All jokes aside, yes you’re right, the rifle has no problems achieving 50mm with a scope and a little concentration on my end. I don’t shoot for tight groups, or for hunting practice. Just for fun. and the 8” wasn’t meant to be a score or a brag, it’s just the size of the plate I have :)

My point, which relates to this thread, was that the 5MoA reticle is probably less accurate than simply using the iron sights :-)

The only accuracy data I've logged with the red dot gave me 45mm groups at 50m off the bench with my Norinco JW21 lever. I did try it at 100m but the 5MoA reticle made it very difficult to hold an accurate point of aim and I didn't bother recording the group sizes. A 5MoA reticle on a 6.5MoA plate is probably a pretty good sight picture, but I'd be interested to know what your groups are like when aiming at a 1MoA target.

A member here had a red dot on his revolving 22 rifle and it was pretty accurate. The advantage being that with both eyes open and a good eye relief you could strafe your way onto the target if you missed the first time. 22's were meant to shoot lots of bullets and fast. I miss the semi Auto.

There are red dots and reflexes available with much smaller dots than 5moa.
Bosma do a 2moa reflex sight, I was going to get one for my little badger, but I have decided to stick with the plastic irons for now.

Update on the Red dot program.
Decided on a Bushnell TRS-25 and was amazed how good it was.
Took it to the local Pistol club that allows 22lr rifles and sighted in at 25m
And after initial sighting put 10 shots in a golf ball!
Next week off to SSAA Newcastle at 50m and had pretty much the same result.
Definitely converted as both eyes open is a great wat to go.

What was the Bushnell worth? $150? Did it come with a mount?

I've put one of these on my 30/30 and really like it. Its small and bloody light with an integral mount and for only $180(fnq price) it's good value. Just be careful not to over tighten the base screw as they break very easily!!!!  :drinks:
