Anyone shooting a CVA Scout, no not a Bergara a scout appreciate your thoughts on this rifle, they have a good range of calibres in the US but don't see many here.

Can I also throw a Savage 219 none on the sale sites for some time

Nothing wrong with singles.

IIRC someone I knew broke the "tang" (3-4 yrs ago) trying to open the action on a 308? Could be it's a weak extraction system.
But, to be fair I'm not 100%.

Suggest research it further. I don't want to put you off.

Just checked. It's CVA scout, 243

The yank write ups on the CVA are pretty good but they are spoiled for choice.

I would love to find a Savage 219in 30-30 but again rare here but common in US, a single shot would work great for me now, The CVA appex I think it was called had interchangeable barrels if you could get them

I have a CVA scout, was a originally a nice 44 Magnum when I bought it, had no use for a single shot 44 Magnum so I had it rebarreled to 500 S&W, I doubt animals can tell much difference

The trigger breaks at a crisp 2.5lbs and its an easy gun to carry in the field.

I am keen on on a CVA in 223 or 7-08 I see the new Bergara thumbhole stock model fluted stainless has hit a few shops but looks like only 308win so far, whats the recoil like on the 308win Bergara's

There was a tidy Ruger #3 22 hornet at last gun auction only made $800.00 plus the juice still a good price

Why bother with a 223? You have the 22 Savage Hi-power.

I think both cartridges are very similar, but the Hi-Power has no factory options, and extremely limited bullet choice for reloading.

I'm a 7mm-08 fan. I doubt there is any measurable difference in recoil between 7mm-08 and .308 with similar bullet weights at similar velocities. A full-power 100gn 7mm-08 though will have less felt recoil than a full-power 200gn .308 round in the same rifle.

Yes, if you can find a Ruger for under $1000 grab it.

I was tempted to get a CVA imported in 444 marlin. They have the 25" barrel and long throated you can push them like a 450/400nitro. Alternatively get a CVA in 44mag and ream it to 444 marlin. The barrel is shorter with the 44mag though, 22"

I have a Ruger #3 in 223 rem, had it for yonks, last year I was tempted to sell it as I hardly used it but I pulled out at the last minute and have been having a ball with it since.
I found some 224 62 grain btsp bullets and that little gun just loves them, so accurate I'm stunned. The only thing I dislike is the 22" barrel, it's so bloody loud.
Moving over to the 22 Savage hi power, I have a savage 1899 in that caliber and faced similar hurdles. FWIW you can use 224 bullets in it if you think outside the box, powder coat the 224 diameter jacketed ones up to a MAXIMUM of 2275 and just use them, it may take several coats to get the diameter up to that figure I have some images but can't seem to load them up showing how I did it.
I've pc'd 50 grain barnes varmint grenades - 2 coats, 55 grain cast 3 coats (you can go a bit bigger with cast) 62 grain btsp.2 coats. Much will depend on the powder you use and the oven temperature. I drilled an alloy plate with umpteen holes in and baked the bullets nose down which appears to get the powder coat on evenly.
Accuracy with the lighter bullets will be better than the heavier due to the rifling twist being more suited for 50-60 grain bullets.
Start with the bottom load for 70 grain loads and work up in 1 grain increments until you've gone up 3 grains over the start at load then reduce it to whatever your happy with to fine tune it.
One tip, clean the bullets thoroughly before pc-ing them as they will still have some lub on them. Wash them using either colman lamp fuel or the aspen fuel, both are synthetic neither leaves a residue. HTH.

Just a ps to the post above, you can clean the bullets with isopropanol (IPA), it's the alcohol that printers use to clean the rollers on printing presses, I had aspen in the shed and all the IPA I had at the time was mixed with lanolin for sizing lubricant, not good for purpose.

Another PS, if you want to trust an old Pom on the internet the following loads form a start point for 22 savage Hi Power. NB these loads work OK in my 1918 Rifle but it's my eyes and my fingers at risk, you use the data at your own risk.
50 grain varmint grenade + PC 27 grains CFE223,
55 grain cast +gas check and PC 25 grain CFE223
62 grain BTSP + PC 28 grains CFE 223.
If you can get LOVEX powder down there, for the 62 grain spbt S062 start at 25.5 grains, S065 start at 27.8.(these are the LOVEX start at loads for the 70 grain SP so are quite mild).
The 55 grain cast with gc and PC works with 8 grains of 2400, 6 grains of hodgdon Universal OR LOVEX D036, gives around 1600 -1700 fps.
I use either S&B LRP or Magtech LRP. Seat the bullet out at around 62mm OAL minimum, in the case of the 55 cast you may have to allow this to be longer to get the ogive out the case neck.
It pays to expand the case mouths to get a good start for the bullet so the powder coating isn't torn off, I have started putting a little rub of lee's liquid alox on the shank of the bullet to help it on its way, it can't hurt can it? I give them a medium-ish crimp on my lee factory crimp die.
My predictive software suggests that the jacketed rounds with the loads I've indicated should make between 2600 and 2850 fps at the muzzle and around 40,000 psi - they can be loaded much faster, but I stopped at the first good accuracy node even then the barnes VG was exceeding 3000 fps on my magnetospeed chrono.which makes it quite destructive if I can hit anything with the peep sights. Certainly covids come apart at the seams.
I don't load any that show up on my software as exceeding 45000psi
Can I reiterate, if you use this data you use it at your own risk, I mean how much can you trust a bloke on the internet. I wore safety glasses and clean Kax. But I've not seen any pressure signs as yet and on some of the loads even got carbon back on the neck.

Re: Single Shot Rifles

There is nothing wrong with a Single Shot rifle. They are just as much fun to shoot as any bolt or lever action rifle. That said I only have four of them. I got my first one when I was 11 years old. It is a 22 RF, Winchester bolt action model 121. Using it taught me to hit my target because there was no way I could reload it fast enough for a follow up shot. Something like 35 years later I got my second one. A Thompson Center Contender carbine in 221 Fireball. Works great on prairie dogs in Montana. I picked up a 98 Mauser that was converted to use the 219 Zipper Ackley Improved round. Got that one just because I like wildcat cartridges. The last one is an 1875 Sharps rifle in 45-70. All of them are just plain fun to shoot.
