ZEISS in China? WTF?

Post by Wapiti » 09 Oct 2026, 10:21 am

We've been being bombarded by online ads about budget Zeiss prices and new selling agents, damn phone listening to our conversations.

Everyone was disappointed with Meopta going to Chyna, but what's with Zeiss selling Chinese binos and scopes?
Is this the end of the real good gear?
Have they moved production? Have they caved too?
Is this the beginning, can someone with industry knowledge let on what's happening?

If Swarovski do this, I would not be pleased.

Been seeying things like this in the shooting industry for quite a while don't think you'll find their top tier scopes being made in China but the entry level stuff seems a lot of manufacturers doing this it's their main bread and butter for instance Mercury outboards not sure on their smaller Motors but I know they're 50 horsepower and 60 horsepower are made in China I also know several commercial operators around here who are using these and have done for several years and they get a hell of a hard life and only time they leave the water is when they go on the trailer really gets serviced and they never have any problems with them and that to me is a huge surprise because just about all the Chinese outboards I've ever had anything do with around here absolutely rubbish but China can make good equipment if the company ordering it are willing to pay to get decent equipment

I'm sticking to all my "original" Zeiss Duralyts and Conquests.
I even have spares sitting quietly in their original boxes in a safe designated for them.

I stopped buying Zeiss with the advent of the V4's.

It seems to be a trend with companies that manufacture all manner of goods (not just shooting related), to put out a product that is world class in quality, performance, and reliability.
Get a following, and a highly respected brand name,,,, and then go to Chyna for cheap Rse knock offs, but continue with the "name"
That way, they make huge profits selling 2nd rate goods.
And that is the beginning of the end.

One good example comes to mind,,,,,,
McCulloch Chainsaws.
Founded in 1943 and were in their days one of the best and most reliable chainsaw available.
Sold off in stages to various other manufacturers in Europe as well as,,,,,, you guessed it, China.
Still available in the distinctive yellow color and original name,,,,,,,,,,,
But the quality ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, :unknown: :unknown: :silent: :silent:
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
And,,,,It's been proven,,,,, the most trustworthy females in my entire life were all canines.

My mother in law bought one of those small cars with the MG logo - the ones the Chynaman bought the rights to use.
It's just another example. But to her, it's an MG!
Why someone'd think that's great is beyond me - when I was a kid, the fact an MG was still hanging on and hadn't cracked or rusted in half or burned a litre of oil running to the shops was a miracle. A respected brand to boast about?

Then the other day I was in town looking at a very nice Steyr 308 hunting rifle. I didn't know what the strange looking space telescope was perched on to and the shopkeeper says, "it's a Vortex 5-25, great scope in keeping with the quality of the rifle, couldn't think of a better choice" as I looked at the bin and imagined the sound of that Chinese junk hitting the side on the way in.

There was a gun tuber a while back that put all the cheap scopes from a lot of the common brands together and showed that they were all the same scope internally, with slight cosmetic changes to differentiate between the brands.
I think it may have been backfire. Was a while back.

90% of consumers purchase on the "look" of an item, not the functionality.
So China will still keep polishing turds so the stupid round eye can consume, at whichever price point gives them the best endophine release.

China will end up like Japan for stuff in the mid-price range, and the UN failed world order thing will just try and turn to India, Korea, and others for the cheap junk.
80-90% of components will be Chinese.

Watch the green woke govt start talking about microplastics, when we can't buy a plastic product that isn't breaking, and starting the breakdown process within about 6 months; put it in the sun, and it is likely half that.
I often look at the wife's stack of washing baskets for a common example: can you still buy a decent one? Unlikely.
It doesn't have to be this way; an Otto bin can sit in the sun for a decade or more.

I heard the American scope story a while back, but can't be sure of the facts anymore.
I think it was found that components like lenses and stuff were Chinese in Nightforce and Leupold scopes, but Leupold scopes were fully assembled in the USA, Nightforce, not so much.

I was just a working-class man, so owning a house took priority over having 7 or 8 Euro rifle scopes.
Now a Leupold costs what those Euro scopes used to.

My long shooting eyes are still OK and I don't even shoot 1,000m, let alone a mile or so.
No real intention of paying even the current Leupold prices if I can get a decent scope for half the price, and swap it with warranty if it fails.
My hunting is mostly within a few hundred yards, so I don't need slightly clearer glass for a few grand more $
What is 5-10 minutes more shootable light, not a lot.

I saw an impressive midrange scope at an ADA meeting. Sold through a major Sydney shop.
Obviously Chinese, but not just all the features; it seemed very clear and bright.
Not sure If I would choose the huge target type model, but the smaller 4-16 hunting model would be worth a better look through outside.
I followed up with some research, and it popped up with the same scope with another brand name, just some slight differences like turret markings lol.

If you want to see why this stuff (pretty much EVERYTHING) is now made in China, sit yourself down and watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMlmjXtnIXI
Yes, it is the US perspective on what's happening, but the very same thing applies here.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again; I go out of my way NOT to buy chinese. I'd rather go without than support the 'evil empire'. The price will, inevitably, be higher for German, Swiss, US, etc., products, but that's a cost I'm prepared to endure.
You think scope manufacture, by the "top" brands, in China is not where we should be headed? Even that Mexican beer 'Corona' is now made and shipped by the container load from China, and bottled close to the market. No point in transporting all that fragile glass, is there.
And when you're next at the supermarket, take a close look at where a lot of your food comes from.

Will try and watch that, but 1 hr 20 min, will have to wait a while.
At least the Yanks can still manufacture stuff; we let the whole industry die.

Was only a few govts ago that they were going to let China take us over, they were last seen buying the farms FFS.
It's bad enough letting them take the mining.
Kevin Crudd is still being rewarded for his part in selling us out.

Is it too late now, how are they going, taking the port of Darwin back?

So, tell your local supplier/wholesaler/importer that, sadly, you will no longer buy their products.
On principle.
If they drop their manufacturing costs, but no the sale price, it;s just a BS way to get more money by selling poorer quality.
Even if they do drop the price, I'm usually happy to pay a premium to keep things made in the West, eg. Aussie made work boots.

Maybe the "Go woke, go broke" needs to me Go WOK, go broke"...
