Cat B Genuine Need - QLD

Post by junior_04 » 14 Apr 2025, 11:31 am

Hi folks, just after some help understanding Cat B PTA’s as I’m about to do my first.

As I’m sure you all already know, you’re given an option for you genuine need between “recreational shooting on rural land” and “sport and target shooting”.

My question is, if I pick one of these options, does that mean I can’t use that rifle for the other reason? i.e. if I pick shooting on rural land (because I want to hunt larger game) does that mean I can’t go sight in my rifle at the range?

I know it’s a simple question but I can’t find the answer anywhere

Thanks, Jr.

The idea is to write a genuine need that covers what you want to do with that particular cartridge but does not stop you from giving other genuine reasons for other purchases .
Tailor the genuine need wording to that particular type of action or style of the rifle you are buying and the caliber for humane destruction of a certain size feral game . ie. I need a 308 Winchester bolt action with a medium length barrel for humane destruction of feral pigs in thick bush where a smaller caliber is not safe or humane to use .
Next one can be for rabbits , then goats at longer ranges , then a Heavy barrel varmint rifle for lying prone shooting at small game . Etc . Etc. Etc. The main this is keep a copy of every genuine reason you use so that the next one used is different wording giving a different excuse for a different class of firearm . You can take any registered gun you want within range rules to the range to practice as long as you tick target and hunting on the range attendance receipt .

You have to prove genuine reason for one and you can use it for both so long as your licence has condition code RE1 and SC1 on it which I assume it will.

Do you really only get to choose one genuine reason?
Target shooting on a range or shooting on rural land?

When we choose to get another PTA, we do not get that option on a Primary Production license, which is why I'm asking.
We just always get the obligatory email a few days later "why what you've already got won't be suitable", every time for the last two years.
And then, we just explain a reason in return, just like JohnV's excellent suggestion in his previous post above.

I always recommend and suggest friends fill out the "Form 1 Annexure - Recreational Shooting and Fishing" by a landowner, to ensure they get RE1 on their license. Just in case, nowadays.
