ADR on vehicles (contradictory)

Post by Die Judicii » 10 Aug 2026, 9:15 pm

For those old enough to recall,
Do you remember the fads and habits involving the "car" and typical Frid and Sat nights ?

The over sized furry foam Dice that hung from so many internal rear view mirrors,, Beer can ring pull chains that circled the interiors,, Window stickers, and of course the obligatory fox tails.

The weekend wouldn't be complete without being pulled over by the local constabulary and, (at the very least) getting a lecture about the Dice etc blocking your view and possibly causing an accident.

Which brings me to the "ADR on vehicles (contradictory)

The current line of ADR involving the exterior rear view mirrors that are now in place on so many (if not all) "newish" and new vehicles.
They are sooooooooooo,, big, that while affording a somewhat magnificent rear view,,, they now block the sideways and forward angled view of the driver.

Typical scenarios are driving across pedestrian crossings, and entering roundabouts to name but a few.
This rear view mirror induced blind spot is big enough to mostly hide an oncoming vehicle, and certainly big enough to hide an entire pedestrian.

Contradictory and ironic,, compared to getting a lecture about the dice, considering the fact that this problem is caused by ADR

:wtf:

As far as on concerned adrs only apply to the cars that were made here for a start any light source on the front of the vehicle can not go right across the car funy how a lot of EVs have that same with the tail light then you're not allowed to have headlights that have a sharp edge from light to darkness it must fade Into Darkness all new cars have the previous seems that if you import a car rules do not apply and don't get me started on these arseholes who put LED light upgrades in their cars and don't re aim their headlights it's illegal yet they don't enforce it I could go on but it would just make me sound like a grumpy old c*** :allegedly:

I used to bring fox tails back for some mates that hooked them on their chopped hotrods. When doing their runs.
I never could work out what the perversion was to put them on the rods, but there you go.
Was great for return favours, a fox tail could get me a Statesman front end for one of my Holden one-tonner ute builds.

I ran around in the days of the fluffy dice, but to me a stupider copy-some-other-idiot fad there couldn't be.
Even when I tried running a Valiant ute to see what the fuss was.

Strange thing was, the coppers around here won't hassle someone with a hardtop or rod that's done up and driven by a silver-haired couple, complete with 100-decibel dump-pipes and 3" ground clearance... they'll overlook those things because they seem to appreciate the work and the style.
And because that demographic is appreciated by most, regarded of legalities of it all.

Instead, they'll target the dusty Landcruiser ute that's come into town with the roof spotty and turn it inside out looking for that loose 223 round in the console or a gun bag being visible behind the seats from the outside. Guaranteed.

I think that for any vehicles being “imported” , they have to be ADR compliant, otherwise wouldn’t pass roadworthy for registration.

Not according to all the mechanics and I know quite a few around here they have observed exactly the same thing as I have .
for what it's worth no car manufacturer out there is going to go out of their way to change things to suit our markets because our markets are just too small so the government quite simply looks the other way because we don't have a car industry anymore
