An update on NSW PTA wait times

Post by Flavius Maximus » 02 Mar 2026, 7:18 pm

After bondi, as many of you will know, there's been an influx of new licence & PTA applications. Because they hate guns so much, the government has doubled down on manual processing. I gave the registry a buzz as it's been a month since applying for a Rimfire PTA to get a bunny gun, & it's still listed as "referred for adjudication". The operator told me the average wait time is 60 days, so you best be hoping you don't need another rifle any time soon.
This may affect me getting another centrefire or a flintlock, as i was thinking of trading in the Smelly for a lever gun, but flintlocks are made of unobtanium, & since i plan to go overseas in October, it might not be worth it.
Thoughts?

I and no doubt others, share your frustration as I am in your position also. I understood that FAR had acquired "extra staff". If that was the case, then why so slow? When they had to manually process PTA's some time back, I think from memory, it took roughly 28-36 days for some of the processing. Now, what are the "extra staff" doing?
By the way, those of you who ring FAR, don't forget that the person you speak to is human too. Be polite, as this costs nothing.
I knew of someone who worked there a while back and all they wanted was to help where possible and be spoken to as you would like to be spoken to. In other words, don't shoot the messenger.

I agree. Abusing them may in fact lead to your license being cancelled & you guns taken off you. Just get your info as soon as you can, & have your little rant once you hang up. But, i often find these operators to be lovely

You have to remember that they can't be trusted, despite how nice the phone operators seem.

A few short years back, new license applications were taking a year or more; how could staff shortages cause that sort of time delay.
My theory is it was to have lots of them give up and not start shooting.
Funny how they fixed it after Borsak put the pressure on.
I suspect this current one was controlled at 2 months because they knew they would face a big backlash, with SFFP arguing the truth about how they could possibly manage these new gun laws if they couldn't even handle some new licences and reasons added.

Another attack was to try and take licenses from anyone who ticked the disability box.
A doctor had to answer their comprehensive list of questions, assuring them you had no mental health issues.
Also assuring them that no physical disability could affect using, handling, or storing firearms in any way.
After many disabled shooters had to fight to get their licenses and guns back, they admitted it and called it a trial.

We were lucky in NSW to have a couple of good SFFP reps in seats, but we will no longer have appeal rights so the bad govt now has the go-ahead to cull licenses.
With their legislation backfiring before they even started writing it, do you expect them not to fight the new license numbers for payback and fear of even more shooters when their aim was to cull LAFOs?

The FAR staff will not be shooters, farmers, or anything like logical country people; it was based on the north NSW coast, where greenies, hippies, antis, drugos, and Byron Bay types live, so who do you think will work there?
