Is just using a boresnake enough to clean a new 22lr

Post by Mongrel » 09 Sep 2016, 3:59 pm

Hey guys, my PTA just arrived, only took 9 days from filling out form to arrive in mail :drinks: .
Its for 22lr, as im going camping in a couple weeks i wanted to get a plinker as the 308 is too exp to go crazy with for 3 days and 3 pple.
im only getting a cheap Norinco one, but im sure it will do the job(Plink).
My question is will a viper boresnake be good enough for initial clean as i dont wanna buy the rods brushes and sorts as the 22 will not require cleaning as the 308 gets.

TIA Mongrel

I would say 'no' mate.

A bore snake is field cleaning tool, to be used in a pinch if a bit of something gets in your barrel so you don't have to decide between not shooting any more, or shooting out dirt or mud to continue the trip. The later is obviously undesirable for safety and barrel integrity/life reasons.

It is not a through cleaning tool though.

If you got a bit of crap in the muzzle from brushing it in the dirt or something, pulling the snake through a few times is enough to continue the trip. Personally I wouldn't put one up against a barrel filled with greased from the factory though.

Why not ask you're local store if you can borrow a rod for 5 minutes to do it in store. I'm sure they'd be happy to if you bought something on the day.

Yep, cleaning all oil, grease etc out of the barrel is very important BEFORE firing it. Get some , buy or borrow a kit and use it prior to firing.

All of the above.

You'll damage the rifling/barrel firing it if you half-ass the first clean.
