Feral dogs

Post by albat » 24 Sep 2016, 4:42 pm

tried a cheapo fox blaster call was using it for half an hour or so walking up a slope back to the track when i was met by 3 wild dogs! Standing staring at me 30 metres away i dropped the nearest one with a head shot and missed the fleeing ones.first time i have had a dog come to a call seems ok for a cheapo , does anyone have any recommendations for these calls ?

Good one

Not from whistling but a while back and make and I came over a small hill on the property and found ourselves looking at 3 feral dogs while we're standing there with unloaded rifles.

Bit of an 'oh s**t' moment, ha ha

I use an old school tin fox whistle and imitate a trapped rabbit..... works for me ...despite there being few rabbits around here, but lots of wild and feral dogs.

What area are you from, Duncan? We don't seem to have a huge issue over my way atm, except for pigs starting to get in around town, but they seem to have been beaten back a bit.

Will only be a matter of time now, though, especially as you can't go into the bush after them

Its WA, you can only shoot on private property with permission, so you can't follow them off of private property, so they're basically protected while they're in the forrests

Hi Bill / Duncan
Up my way the dogs are a huge problem, last muster there were 5 of us carrying rifles and we accounted for 19 dogs between us, that was only shooting oppertuistcaly. 2 years ago the dogger in Cue got 90 in November. I have posted some pics of some I have shot.

Those were shot in the Pilbara. I am based in the Midwest the dogs are not here yet but will be soon, they are a real problem east of here, a mate got two yesterday he is about 40 Km east of Cue. I have shot a few pig dogs around Northampton, that people don't try to recover, plot things are probably starving but that doesn't help the cockies sheep.

I was referring to the Gascoyne. The problem has been recognised and dogging contracts are being offered,Its a bit of money but they GPS you and you have to show results by trapping and baiting and if fortunate and good enough shooting.I was on a station south of Carnarvon for a while when it first started and supplied the Kangaroos for baiting to the chap doing it.I shot a lot of cats and about 10 dogs out there

Now I am back down south it has worked out well as my best processor down here has started taking meat again for baits.Every 2 years some bright spark from uni comes up with a new idea how to control feral dogs and cats but it never works as they only eat dried kangaroo meat with 1080 dropped from a plane.Everything else breaks up and is ineffective

Thanks for posting the link Wade, dogs are my biggest problem here, they learn to avoid traps and their numbers build rapidly. The article covers the reasons well, people dumping puppies in the bush and abandonded hunting dogs..... I shot one pure white Staffy complete with collar....no tag or ID on it..just an old worn collar. Dingoes don't worry me, packs of feral dogs and crosses do. Cheers

Wild dogs have been spotted fairly close to the city, with reports of livestock loss in Wooroloo and sightings through the eastern hills region. Its only a matter of time before a tourist or bush walker gets attacked

At the weekend I was looking for some fallow. Saw some dog tracks so will take the whistle next time. Only about 12k from town too.
