Shooting interstate...

Questions about South Australian gun and ammunition laws. S.A. Firearms Act 2015.

Shooting interstate...

Post by MasterBlaster » 25 Jan 2014, 6:36 am

I was wondering, because I live in SA only 20 minutes from Vic, what do I need to do if I wanted to go shooting (either hunting or for target) in Vic for the day???

Have a read of the Victorian Firearms Act. Think it's still current.

As per linked firearms Act for Victoria above, looks like you're good.

That's not the case for all states though. Don't take that as carte blanche to driving to every state.

I think a phone call to notify the local fuzz is required in a few states.

I think it's Victoria, SA and NSW who acknowledge other states licenses more or less 'no questions asked'.

Not the same for WA I think?

Not sure about others.

You can use some permits interstate too. The states mentioned above...

Please note: If you live on the border of South Australia and Victoria, or New South Wales and Victoria, you may submit a Permit to Acquire issued in one state to a licensed firearm dealer located in the other state. Victoria has an agreement in place with South Australia and New South Wales to recognise the other state's Permits to Acquire.

So does that mean I can actually travel to Melbourne to purchase a firearm?? Or am I only allowed to travel just over the border???

I'm in ACT, and hunt it NSW and VIC quite often, as long as you comply with their transport and storage requirements you're all sweet. I think all states recognise interstate licences except WA.

In Queensland you need to apply for a visitors license as well as a B709 import permit at least 28 day prior.

We have the hardest laws in the country.

Have to disagree with you sloth, just moved to WA from NSW and before I moved I had to obtain a temporary permit to carry my firearms to the nearest gun dealer to my new residence.

Had to get a serviceability certificate for each firearm $50 each, which identified the firearm. All of which had been registered in NSW for up to 15 years . I have a current license in NSW and have had this for 25 years. (Means nothing here). Also had to pay a Fee of $50 for the dealer to take the firearms into his possession & $15 / month per firearm for storage until I could get a license here.

To get a license here I had to get a letter of permission to hunt for each firearm, not an easy task when you have just moved 5,000kms & don't know anyone. Guns still in storage months later and still looking for some understanding property owners with 1,000 acres or more. (min requirement for the calibres I have).

Yay for WA
