Maker space for reloaders

So another brain fart. I am not sure if you guys are familiar with a concept of maker space...

Maker spaces, sometimes also referred to as hackerspaces, hackspaces, and fablabs are creative, DIY spaces where people can gather to create, invent, and learn. In libraries they often have 3D printers, software, electronics, craft and hardware supplies and tools, and more.

Big in IT, where everyone brings something, tools, old hardware and just come and hack on hardware, software, socialise with likeminded people or get some help on whatever they are working on. Recently it gained popularity as 'community space' for woodwork, not sure about any other places.

Would be awesome to have something like that for reloading! Just a thought. Don't think it would work in the bush, where distances are huge, but in Melbourne metro area - could work well, chip in for small factory space. Have some workshops, tools for free use, or just rent a space for some reloading if you just come in off the street. Anyway, just a random thought.

Iv'e often thought how crazy it is that everyone who's into reloading buys all the tools.
If we had some kind of group thing going like the Mens Sheds community.

Perhaps it would work within a gun club, if you made a date for a group reload session and told people to bring in equipment to share for a few hours. I'd bet after a few years you could build up a full kit of reloading equipment to share made up from surplus equipment donated by reloaders. For example I've got a spare beam scale that's not likely to be used and a neck reamer that I don't like ... I'd donate that sort of stuff to a reloading club of sorts.

Sounds like a good idea between a few mates, but if the group grew to become public expect the unfriendlies to invent a law to take the fun out of it.

My local dealer told me a while back that he does a reloading night at the shop every month and that I was welcome to come along.
I think it was more of a teaching exercise than simply churning out ammo though.

This is where turret presses would shine. Simply screw in your own turret, shellholder and away you go. A few presses and scales in a shed, add a bbq and it would make a great night.

Mind you: a collective to buy Dillon gear and a bunch of the expensive case prep gear where everyone just has their own turret head for each cartridge to load in bulk...... Now that could work.

Concentration counts.
My girlfriend was talking to me while I was loading some 6.5x55mm the other day.
I managed to seat a bullet without charging the case.
I spotted it straight away as the tray was still full of powder when I went to dump the next load into it.
I always shake each round by my ear after a session to make sure they're charged so I would've spotted it regardless, but mistakes are easily made.

You're missing the point here. OCD bit I completely understand. But the broader objective here is to have a community space and heat for people to use who wouldn't otherwise. It's less about reloading batches for the range and more about learning and tinkering.

Not the product of a nanny state; the product of having been involved in business and the running of a few public incorporated NFP organisations.

If you don't consider these things you're walking into a world of pain. People are always, 'she'll be right, we're all good' until they f*** up and are looking for someone to blame.

There's also the issue of shared property. Don't want to end up like a local gun club here where it was 'all good' until the president absconded with the takings for a 'holiday to Tahiti' and left the public officer holding the liability and the members out of pocket and the club defunct.

Just a reality check.

Liability is covered by insurance or body corporate, depending on the details. Everything is the same as any other club or organisation. You have a constitution, asset register, etc. Everything that you have called out is trivial to mitigate. Trivial. Hence, I said this is nanny state in you talking.

I recon equipment is either owned by the club or brought for use by an individual and taken home when that person goes home.

Finding a usable location in Melbourne, a small factory for rent or something and figuring out how to finance it is a challenge. Especially the financing part. Equipment can be a acquired through sponsorships and whatever, like this is not even a blimp on a challenge radar.

Anyway, just a brain fart at this stage.

It's all trivial, as I say, until someone f***s up and comes looking at you for someone to blame. It's not about a nanny state, it's about people's inherent unwillingness to take responsibility for their own screw ups.

It's a very real risk and going into something like this with out considering it is foolish. Accusing me of being part of a nanny state because I am the first to point it out is really kind'a childish.

Definitely. However, you really want to have everyone on premises fully licensed, so sharing the facility would be an issue I suspect. Also, why wouldn't women be not allowed?
