Anyone here a fan of goat? Eating them that is...

I'm headed out to a relative property in the coming weeks who has a goat problem and apparently there is no shortage of them to shoot.

They just drop 'em and leave them though, don't eat them.

I guess it's a bit like lamb? I was thinking given the opportunity we'd do some camping cooking and try a goat on the spit if they can be okay.

It's a bit leaner than lamb so slow roast with a bit of water is the way to go.

Leave the billy's (they aren't called stinkies for nothing) try and get a young one and take the back legs off, put in a camp oven, on a trivet (keeps it off the bottom of the oven), rosemary, garlic, olive oil, a bit of water, cook for about two to three hours, not too many coals or it will burn, add more water as needed, shes cooked when you can break it apart with your fingers.

I went to a Greek yesterday and had a "kid of goat" for lunch.

Goat skewers are fantastic, we marinade them overnight in a plum or BBQ sauce. Then add a combination of pineapple pieces, onion, green/red capsicum or whatever you have that can be pushed along a skewer. Great bit of grub

Pretty sure "kid of goat" is the equivalent of "veal" - Young goat.

We have roasted young goats just the same as lamb. So camp oven should do a good job. Very tasty, much like lamb. For those interested the correct name for goat meat is chrevron. Must get out again soon.

A big slow cooked goats leg is the business.

I have a fav Moroccan restaurant which does this as their speciality. Tastes great.

Have a lot of friends and family members that swear by it. However..........in my case......I never ever got used to the taste of goat. These stinkers really get to me

Anything in the way of Goat other than what is called "Yearling" ... or young Goat under say 18mths old is only good for mince meat or mixed to hide the flavour.

However a young Goat is best cooked as a "slow roast" over very moderate to low heat for several hours. Legs, both ends, slightly spiced with a touch of dripping in a roasting tray. Turn a few times and baste.

Have done a quite a few many years ago. Freshly killed at first light/ early morning. Dressed and in my case a fuel stove ready at low heat around midday and closely regulated for six-seven hours. Dinner guests turned up, were not told what the menu was. Dinner served with roast vergitables and boiled greens, light brown gravy. The comments after the requests for the seconds was, "Gee that was beautiful Lamb, hang on it was better than any Lamb I have ever eaten" then told it was Goat....most asked for thirds and even a take away as cold meat.

If anyone likes and know the difference between Veal and Beef, well the young Goat was like a Veal version of the best Lamb Roast you have ever had. No way you can pick the flavour and no way does it tast like Game Meat if it's cooked properly.

If I still lived on that property and had access to the wild Goat then any visitors would get that as a main meal and like times before pestered with offers of help with work on the farm just to get that feed.

Done properly I don't think you could beat it.

Camp oven, very slow over many hours could also be a winner but don't forget the sides and gravy.

We have a few feeds of goat(there are a few different names about but goat will do me) each year, a friend keeps a few as killers. Younger is better, same as Lamb. Virtually no difference when domestic goat is cooked except the goat is better, chops are especially better.

Indian friends also cough up a few meals worth of curry each time I get them a side.

No Feral goats down here as such just the odd herd of escapees.

Take a few young doe legs home for sure. Usually slow cook it or make curry. I have cooked a whole one in my ranch weber and it was ok, not as good as pig or lamb though.

A young one goes well on the spit too but you need to wrap it in wire net as they tend to fall apart worse than lamb.

Very tasty. As long as it looked clean, free of parasites and the rest I'd definitely eat one after a shoot.

Long story short out trip got postponed for a couple of weeks, but I did hit up a Greek restaurant last week and give it a go

Had like a slow oven roasted one braised in some fancy spices. Really good.

Better than Lamb IMO, you're right about that fall off the bone tenderness
