Loot on the way home...

Decided to swing past the tyre place I was eyeing for some wheel weights...

Yay! Enough to start methinks.

Enough?? No such beastie. Enough for now, maybe, but what about later? Next year? And this is how it starts, after a while you're thinking of movint to a larger place to store all you're gear.

I'll clarify, enough to start learning. Not enough for a stock pile.

Be sure to check the markings on them and tap each one with a steel screw driver, if a dull thud fine, a "ting" bin it. Not all wheel weights are made from lead and get a wrong one in the pot and it'll ruin the mix.

Any chance of getting mine back JS ? :P

Seriously though, another good place to get them is at the auto wreckers. Just drop in with a few beers and ask the owner if you can go and harvest a bucket full or so ;)

A beer in the hand is worth a hundred times its weight in gold, well lead in this case

I stopped by metal junk place and they wanted $3/kg which seemed like bulls**t. I'll have to see if there are any local wreckers here.

Darwindingo, don't know what you're on about. I was home all night.

Just think of the satisfaction you will feel that you cast them yourself :D Not to mention the fact that your learning and preserving the skill to do so, that's bloody worth more than gold imo mate ! :friends:

Just pinch one of these from the kitcben when the boss aint looking. Or go to the salvo's, I use an old alluminium one on the camp stove.

Plenty of ventilation and bobs your uncle.

Alluminium is fine, SS too. Check the melting points, lead is about 327c and alluminium about 660c. SS much higher, alluminium s**ts it in and lead will not stick to it.

Salvos or garage sale.

PS . Just to start out a SS table spoon or big tea spoon will do as a dipper. Just might need a wooden handle to prevent burn to fingers.

From memory lead melts at about half the temp of aluminum OB, I certainly agree, ventilation is very important !

ye, planing to do it outside on the bbq, so ventilation is not an issue. I'll most likely get a painter mask thing too...

Everything else, thanks, that's the go then.

Forget the mask, not requjred. You are not doing it every day, just maybe monthly. If you want buy a P2 mask at a safety shop. Dont buy a P1, it is only for particulate/dust. Avoid places like bunnings, they may not give good advice. It will need to be a good fit otberwise it wont be very efficient due to leaks.

PM me if you would like more info.
