What would you want to see from an Aussie shooting blog?

Post by Mr.Seacucumber » 15 Nov 2016, 6:51 am

Gday

I'm looking at starting to write a new blog and possibly do some videos, I'm looking at focusing on community, politics and guns in general and I was wondering if you guys had any ideas on what you would like to see in a blog?

I'm looking at writing something that is going to be rather neutral and try to get imput from both sides as well as report on the news.

So any ideas or input would be very welcome :)

Can't say I've ever bothered looking at blogs, I assume it's just someone waffling on about their thoughts etc which really isn't of much if at all any interest to me personally, I guess others might find in of interest though?

I think someone else does one here which I had a brief look at and concluded it was just meaningless dribble and of no interest to me, again others may find it of some interest, just not my cuppa reading someones life story about how they find shooting etc.

Anyway good luck with it mate and I hope it works out as you thought it would.

Mr.Seacucumber, go for it! As long as it's not politics.

I'm going to try and be neutral on politics and just try to report the news, going to try to find a balance between Ozzie reviews quite attitude and Shootings stuff Australia's fun kinda attitud, something in the middle haha

Keep it light, entertaining and factual. Portray shooting in Australia as a safe recreational activity that all the family can enjoy. Another positive voice out in cyberspace to encourage the undecided to at least try shooting is a good thing. I was at the range Saturday morning and to the right of me was a young couple from a pistol club at Auburn practising with a new CZ SP Shadow 2. Great example of a young couple enjoying a sport together.

I hate blogs.
The page format sucks in my opinion and navigating topics is painful.
I hit a blog the other day while I was researching something. I read a very interesting article about the Carcano rifle, but it was the second installment, and no way could I find the first part of the damned thing.
I prefer an old-school webpage every time. Keep relevant material together instead of interspersed throughout the blog history.

Thats a very narrow view of things. Maybe 10 years ago when everybody made websites in Dreamweaver, websites where easy to navigate and concise. I still see many a great website today with a simple and intuitive nav menu.

My view is only based on the blogs I read. If they were better organised my "view" would be different.
Can you post a link to a blog in similar format to what you envision?

This is a personal page I've been reading and the layout is far less confusing than every blog I've seen.

That's the plan, get out there and see the people doing the shooting sports and all that jazz, I really do want to kinda focus less on the hunting side and more on sport and recreational shooting. I do think we need positive representatives online that can put forward fun and educational content for an Australian audience

Ok, wow thats and old looking website. In my example I was pointing towards more modern websites with user-navigation in mind. Take a look at the WordPress platform. It was originally made for bloggers who wanted a more modern look in their websites without learning to code it. Somthing along the lines of https://ma.tt/ is where WordPress started. It has no menu or "page of contents" but one can be added easily. What makes Matt's website so clean is the "one page" infinite scrolling that WordPress made popular.

I'm not a fan of the "modern" look of websites loaded with graphics. For example, a huge graphic that loads before the actual webpage pisses me off every time I go to a site. :-)
And the endlessly scrolling single page is the _very_ worst way to organise useful information. It's possibly fine for simply spewing random thoughts that nobody is ever going to read anyway. The person that wrote it probably has at least a vague idea of what month they posted something, the rest of us are left to scroll forever.

Not having a "sort by price" function peeves me off to no end. There is a lot to be said for neat simple pages.

Go for it. Take Betts advice. He is on the right track.
Consider WordPress and have look at weebly too. Both free.

WordPress is what you use when diy hosting... Nobody I know uses the alternatives like Drupal or Joomla.

Not quite, WordPress.com is a hosted platform... Just register and off you go.

Drupal is sort of like selling someone a tank when they are after a killo of apples. Joomla is dead. Also, like a tank, neither are 'blogs'.

Ummm. WordPress is both. WordPress.com is managed by Auttomatic and they host the site for you. WordPress.org is the open source CMS.
