As the subject says, what cat is .50bmg in NSW? Is it B or D?

It's CAT B in NSW. Funny isn't it, the average firearm owner can own a bolt action .50. But he isn't trusted by the government to own a semi auto .22. :)

Or a seven shot Adler..

However how long do you think we can have .50bmg before it's taken away.

Is there a "special need" for it when getting a PTA? Or is target shooting and rec hunting a good enough reason?

Target shooting and hunting should cover you. If they ask what your hunting (they shouldn't) just say buffalo or camel. :)

I believe Brett is away shooting said bmg's....

There is no reasons asked in NSW.. you get the pta form, tick the box that says centrefire, Send it to the FAR and they send you a completed purchase.. take that to the dealer and they fill out the guns details and hand you the bottom half and you go on your merry way with said rifle..

A rifle in 375H&H would be cheaper to fire and initial purchase, cause something in 50BMG is proably gunna coast you $10,000 for the gun but would be interesting.

There is no record of a rifle chambered in 50 BMG ever being used in a crime. The ban in QLD is stupid.

50's are awesome fun but not the best choice for holding up the Kwiki-Mart, they are big, heavy, expensive and awkward to transport. One of the joys of living in NSW is that we can buy a 50 off the shelf with a standard Cat B PTA, in fact Magnum Sports had 3 on the wall when I was there earlier this week, It takes a significant financial commitment to shoot these things when reloads still cost around $6 a shot. Very easy to blow through a grands worth of ammo in a day especially with my match ammo running at $12.50 a shot. Personally in the big stuff I love the Barrett ,416, for targets and the .375 Cheytac for long range fur.
Jan 2nd Ill be off for a week doing load development and testing some new copper solids I've had custom made with a Doppler Radar chronograph. I'm relaxing this week getting 50BMG cases loaded and catching up on the massive pile of pistol brass that needs loading.

Yeah poor little guy, took the wind out of him, that kind of stupidity makes my blood boil.....
He had no business being on the end of that rifle for starters but at the very least they could have set him up right....

The recoils nothing in em (something similar to a 308 I reckon) it's the muzzle blast I find the most annoying after a while - good fun to shoot every now and then but not something I'd want to shoot often (just doesn't float the boat being blasted like that) but fun watching others shoot it for the first time (it's nothing like anything you've ever shot before trust me)

A bit cruel setting the young fella up like that but he may have been begging for shot to show how tough he is. I wasn't any different as a kid, I wanted to do everything the big kids did. An old mate of mine wanted to cross the 50 off his bucket list and I was happy to accommodate his wish. Laurie's not a big guy but he had a go and after a little persuading (me calling him a pussy) he backed up for a second. He took on the DTA HTI which has the most recoil of the 3 I own and he's still grinning almost 2 years later. Next week I'll be spending a day at his place getting a education in shooting, these old professional fox shooters have a huge amount of untapped knowledge.

As a heads up for anyone thinking to get involved with the 50's you may want to get in quick. The ITAR curtain has closed again and no more rifles or components are being exported from the U.S for the foreseeable future.

Is anticipating recoil an Issue.I went to England in 2010 and while there I went to a gun shop that had a .460 Weatherby Magnum.Normal size rifle with a big hole down the middle. My safari man claimed it was like trying to shoot straight knowing you were going to get hit in the shoulder with a baseball bat.He designed his own cartridge by necking out 375 H/H to .416.I found that very user friendly and it still did a good job.Love your work going extreme
