You often hear phrases to describe something.
Heres a place to share the coolest of all phases...Phrases coined from firearms related things.

Number 1: Riding Shotgun

Riding shotgun was used to describe the guard who rode alongside a stagecoach driver, ready to use his shotgun to ward off bandits or Indians. In modern use, it refers to the practice of sitting alongside the driver in a moving vehicle. The phrase has been used to mean giving actual or figurative support or aid to someone in a situation.The phrase was coined in 1919.

I'll clarify some of the older expressions for the benefit of our younger gen....
Lock, stock and barrel - Firearms locks were actually made by Locksmiths back in the day as they were the only tradies that could make a mechanism that small and intricate.
Barrels on early canon were made by Coopers (wooden barrel makers) in the same way wooden barrels are made except with forged strips of wrought iron (instead of timber staves) from a blacksmith.. That's why the gunners were in as much danger as the target.
Flash in the pan (Great pic by the way) is when the priming powder in a flintlock gun ignites without setting off the main charge.
Going off half cocked should not be possible as the half cock notch in a cap lock or flintlock is very deep and should not be able to let the sear go.

Ancillary topic, but last post reminded me of it.

When overseas, occasionally a local would get on our nerves. We would ask, "Haven't I seen you somewhere before?" Then stretch left arm and hand all the way forward with index finger pointing straight up. Make a circle with right hand and bring it up to right eye. Look through it at the guy and say, "Oh yeah! NOW I remember!"

The brass monkey is a brass or bronze square screwed to the deck on old cannon firing wooden sailing ships.If spray landed on it and the cannon balls froze together it was considered cold enough to freeze the balls in the brass monkey.Monkey was a term to describe many things on old sailing ships.
