That continued into the 90's, I'm sure. I recall seeing a doco or landline piece on it. Could have been as late as the early 2000s.

Good training for marksmanship.

Also saw a piece where they were collecting seed for reforestation by shooting branches off as part of training. Picking your shot at range on a swaying branch in the breeze can be pretty tricky.
