Snake rap, I took my kids to the Illawarra caravan & camping show were there was a bloke showing off snakes. So I bought a few snake raps off him. Good bit of kit

the usual bandaids, antiseptic swabs and a bottle, cotton buds elastic bandages, gauze, splinter probe, emergency blanket and other common stuff

some things i've added to our basic set are saline bottles, a decent pair of tweezers because most that come in commercial kits are rubbish.

I'm almost worried to look in mine after being reminded by this.

It hasn't been opened in so many years it's probably just full of dust now

Seriously though... mixed bandaids, bandages, a sling, antiseptic, tweezers, scalpel and some cotton swaps.
See you on the firing line.

Mine is one I made up myself.

I ALWAYS carry Snake bandages(they have many uses), a large compressed wound dressing(what else are you going to pad a large hole with?), a slide of panadiene forte(for minor pain), some oxycontin(for major pain) and dissolvable asprin(blood thinning) and a packet of Keflex antibiotic tablets. Small superglue(sticking small cuts together and other repairs), a roll of duct tape(sprains splints, big cuts, repairs- strapping tape is also good but I prefer duct tape as it has more uses ), five cable ties(bloody useful). a hooked and one drop point scalpel blade(no handle but useful for splinters cleaning etc etc) and a set of tweeezers, a few macdonalds salt packets(heaps of uses) and glucose tablets(energy), matches(fires and sterilising), tiny bottle of metho(cleaning fire starting) candle stub(fire starting etc etc). There is also a space blanket and some easily accessible bandaids, chocolate and panadol

I think that is about it, it is well wrapped up at the moment so I don't want to unwrap but I check it every December. I think it important to remember that when it is a personal first aid kit it is just to patch you up and keep you alive until proper help arrives, most minor cuts etc aren't a major issue but doing a proper first aid course is imperative to being able to indentify what is actually going on.

I do a first aid course every second year as well, I did the remote area one a few years ago.

Most important thing is a Personal locating beacon with GPS- absolute MUST HAVE

A first aid course is also essential, something always seems to change each year.

Full on Warrigul.

Most of the blokes I know have the $20 lunchbox one from K-Mart

Forget anything remotely as serious as a GPS beacon.

Locator is definitely a good idea.

My kits pretty set for any non-serious injuries. Cuts, grazes and all that. A broken arm wouldn't be the end of the world but if the worst happened and I broke a leg I'd be stuck at the moment.

Something to add to the kit sooner rather than later I think.

A mates brother is missing because he had a broken arm that wasn't splinted properly(off the beaten track a bit) and on the way to hospital a clot broke loose and killed him.

It is surprising what can kill you with a bit of bad luck.

Yeah, it's sometimes amazing what people live through or don't.

I saw a thing on Guinness World Records or something like that where I guy went skydiving and his parachute failed.

He landed on a high patch of tall cactus' and lived. Massively hurt still obviously, broke 40 bones or something and was in hospital for months and all that. But lived.

Then you hear stuff like people slip over on the sidewalk and bump their head and die :(

Fair few good ideas on here. I have always found that rape tape (or whatever it's politically correct name is) is perfect for the first aid kit. It covers any deep cut and sticks to just about everything I also keep an emergency tourniquet in my kit. And those punch to break cold packs. Other than that I like to keep it simple.

Sorry to hear mate, as you say its surprising what can happen. My nephews friend died in Thailand this year the same way, broke an ankle walking on some rocks at the beach, clot broke loose in hospital and died. She was only 20 and otherwise healthy.

I recently did the St. John's provide first aid course again for the first time in a few years and was introduced to a product I've not seen before. A foam covered aluminium splint material called "Sam Splint" there widely used by ski patrols, military and search and rescue crews

A long strip can be folded and fitted into your pack or left in a vehicle. By folding it into a gutter splint and adding a crepe bandage or two you can splint up an arm or leg pretty well. Hell you can even cut a strip off it and splint a broken finger.

I bought them on eBay

Should get yourself a pair of those shin wraps if it's a concern.

Forget what they're called... They're specifically for snakes anyways.

Interesting...

They're rigid obviously once shaped? Like soft sheet metal or something similar is it?

Yes it's quite soft but wide and when doubled and bent into a channel quite stiff

From their site http://www.samsplint.com.au

"HOW IT WORKS
The reason lies in the physics of curved surfaces inch ”the same physics that allows skyscrapers and bridges to be built of I-beams and hollow columns rather than heavy steel pillars. A flat piece of sheet metal bends easily, but if you mould it into any of several inch œstructural curves, inch it becomes much more rigid. Many such curves are possible, but for splinting with the SAM® SPLINT, you need only three basic curves. With these, you can convert a simple SAM® SPLINT into something so strong that people have even used it as an emergency canoe paddle or snow shovel. That inch ™s more than strong enough for any conceivable splinting need.

At the same time, the SAM® SPLINT is extremely mouldable, and soft enough to cut with ordinary household scissors. The result: with the proper choice of curves outlined in the training guide, almost any bone in the body can be splinted. It inch ™s even possible to use the SAM® SPLINT to create an emergency cervical collar for neck injuries."

I have used sticks a couple of times and they work, you don't have to carry them around with you either.

Keep it simple is the key, all you need is to stay alive. Tape is so useful. Often an arm is better just supported in a sling rather than splinted, it depends on where the break is.

A first aid course is the best insurance you can buy, it is surprising how much makes sense the second time you do one.

I saw a video of some Americans in Iraq a few years back where they had used a guys rifle as a splint for his leg. Apparently they work pretty well for that.

Close enough hahaha. Makes sense for a battlefield scenario the rifle had to go with the guy who broke his leg. And it can't be forgotten or dropped if it's tied to his body. You would definitely want to make it safe and put the butt of the rifle in the groin though. Otherwise it would be pretty crap.
