Lasers legal for rifle shooting?

Post by BBJ » 07 Sep 2013, 8:50 am

Thinking about a laser sight for my rifle...

Just for run really, something different at the range and for sighting in and so on.

Googled for it but couldn't find anything in NT gun laws... Only shooting with them in other states...

What's the deal?

This is a subject that's been all over the place.

Over the years you could, then couldn't...

There was power limits, then permits to get over the limits

Difference between 'handheld' and device mount lasers.

Something about needing valid reasons or not...

Best to speak with your FA registry.

Better yet, email them and get something in writing.

FA registries are notorious for giving out incorrect information... (that will get you in serious s**t for getting wrong)

They need to be below 1 mw to be legal as a hand held laser pointer....... But in other states they give a reasonable excuse for high powered laser pointers. Im pretty sure that a laser fixed to your rifle is not a hand held pointer.

This is one of the areas it goes to pot though. Someone was talking on here a while ago about this after they spoke to the licensing dept. who told them that if you could potentially fit it to a rifle it was no longer classified as a 'hand-held' laser so they couldn't have it.

So basically if there is a roll of tape or a rubber band within drying distance you could potentially fit laser to it and aren't allowed it.
