Hunting in Wombat State Forest VIC?

I'm doing some research into some camping/hunting trips in VIC. I'm in NSW so not familiar with the areas down there, but am working to plot out some places to camp and hunt for a few days?

How do you VIC shooters get on in Wombat State Forest north of Melbourne? A pair of mates live not far south from there which is why I'm looking at Wombat State Forest.

Would be happy with any ferals... pigs, goats, dogs... and bagging a deer would be awesome

There are definitely pigs in there.

I've heard them oinking around a few times and seen a couple.

The occasional deer too.

Don't believe there are any feral dogs there, not from what I've seen anyway.

Not sure about other ferals, but pigs and deer are both in Wombat SF.

I've seen less of the deer. Lole, tell your mate to stay out of there

You can often hear the pigs foraging around though.

Theres definitely pigs, goats, deer, foxes, rabbits and cats there. I'd say there'd be a few dogs in there somewhere too!

It's a bit of a hot spot for dirt bike riders too isn't it?

Not my area (I'm in QLD) but I think a few blokes here complained before that were in the middle of stalking something and some bastard on a dirt bike comes roaring through and ruins everything

It's on my to explore list, haven't been out there myself yet though. Will get there eventually.

G'day gents, I'm new to central vic and am keen to meet some locals and tag along for a hunt.

I'm a responsible shooter and will only hunt with the same, will be checking out wombat for sure.

Wombat is a nice spot. Up the north end there.

The last 3 times I've gone out it was to there. Been too cold the last few months but I'm getting ready to start heading out again soon.

Being central is nice.

Good access to the north and east state forests without having to drive miles.

I live in SE melb which adds an hour to anywhere north if I want to go there.

Lots of 4WD's. I would recommend going during the week.

1000's of mine shafts to look out for.

I have heard a lot of stories of strange people living out there, we had a bloke wander through our camp at night!

I've read all the same complaints fuzzy but I assume that's around the camp grounds?

We go well past those to the end of one of the fire trails. I've only ever gone Friday - Sunday and never seen a soul out there.

Not saying you're wrong, seems we stumbled on an untravelled spot though.

Last time we went out was 5 weeks since the previous trip and our camp site was untouched.

That's my experience out there anyway.

I went out for a drive a few weeks back for the morning that's the perks of living around the corner my brother does work for the council and the rangers were telling him where abouts to find deer

Have been out there twice, both over a year ago, we weren't in a marked campsite, we were off a small track near an old mill site on the Lerderderg river.

Did hear a lot of 4WD's, but looking at a map we weren't far from Blackwood.

I am now thinking it might be a good idea to go back and go a bit further in.

Particularly now that we are getting into hunting.
