Got myself a new rifle on the way. A Marlin 1895CB in 45/70. Pretty happy !

45/70's increase testicular circumference.

They are also great fun to shoot. So many ways to load them. All the way from gentle to FARKEN HELL MATE!!!

They're 405gn plain base flat nose bentaz and yes I did cast them just today

I have just ordered a 45-70 myself.
Exciting times ahead re the huge variety of shooting options available for this caliber.
I've gone for a single shot as I plan to use a bit of BP too.

How do you like it with the scope ?

Yes I like the scope on it, depends on the terrain,have a Simmons 1.5-5 x32 with the diamond
Reticle,quick release mounts on a weaver rail.Like open sights in thick scrub but
As the eyes get on I find myself changing out some of my rifles from buckhorn sights to optical fibre.

Lol that's fair enough. I'm considering putting my leupold 1.5-5x20 on mine. Just not quite sure I can bring myself to do it lol. I personally found it quite hard in the shop to see the front sight,I think the big white diamond on the rear sight makes it harder for me.

Don't know if I have spoken about my eyesight on Enuffgun, so here's the story
My distance eyesight needed help and sunnies for driving were made, which worked beautifully. Coincidentally, they work on open sights too. Even with the peep on my lever gun, I could see two fore-sights. Not any more.
Might be worth a try and Good Luck

It wasn't so much my eyes as it was that there's a really small foresight and then this giant glaring white diamond on the rear sight that kinda distracts your eye from the front sight. When I get it I'll try painting over the diamond and seeing if that helps

Did it on one of my rossi's.
Fluorescent fingernail polish works great,try bright orange or green.

If the sight is anything like my Henry 45/70 you can undo a small grub screw and turn the rear sight insert around so you can't see the diamond.

For factory stuff, levolutuon is about $50/20, some of the cheaper stuff is $30-$40.

You can reload primo hunting ammo for about $1.20 a shot, plinking ammo about .80c

Oh jeeze I didn't realise this thread even existed - this is precisely the next rifle I've got lined-up! bigpete with regard to that white diamond on the rear sight, I think you can flip the sight around so the diamond faces forward - hickok45 talks about it in his video https://youtu.be/diO62p2sMWw?t=673 jump to 11:00 minutes.

How's you load development going? What powder have you got in mind? Gamerancher ( and feel free to interject Gamerancher ) talked about using 2205. I'm still curious as to why you'd choose 2205 over 2207? Slightly slower burning is it (slightly better for that longer barrel I suppose)?

That 2205 load I spoke of was purely a reduced load that was used for lever-action silhouette. Not suggesting for a moment that it would be suitable for bigpete's intended use for buff.

Fair call. So in that realm, why 2205 over 2207?

Did you find a slightly lighter than standard 405gr a little more accurate in the 1895CB?

Bloody hell ! Where are you ? The cheapest I can get is winchester 300gn hollow point for $70/20 and leverlution is $80/20 !

Fwiw I plan on using 2208 simply coz I've already got it lol. I'm still waiting for dies and cases,and I'm waiting for firearms branch to sort out a bungle they've made with my firearms which is affecting my licence renewal

I tried 2208 when I first started sending lead through my 30/30 - just be sure to use single action loads (separately listed on ADI) - I had keyholing issues as I was pushing them a bit too fast.
