.44 magnum rifle destroying red dots?

Post by TAC21_308 » 07 Mar 2014, 10:37 pm

I have a Rossi lever action in .44magnum. Unfortunately I got a dud open site set up and it shot 1m high at 100m. A hacksaw sorted that out for that weekend.

Currently I'm on my second red dot. Tasco aim point. I've lost confidence in it again. I'm sure it has shook the tasco apart. The first one it tore the alignment tube clean out and cracked the front lens before I realized it was stuffed.

Originally I was going to fit a holographic. EoTech 512. Anyone got feedback on an eotech. Theve got to be strong the military use them right?

Apparently 44s are known to destroy scopes?

I had a Bushnell red dot on my B92 lever for a while and it was ok, I moved it on to a 44 revolver which would be harder on it that a rifle, no probs, it's had 1000s of rounds.

What brand was the red dot, cheap eBay stuff won't last on any rifle other than maybe a 22.

It's the tasco. I might look into the bushnell. Though dot MOA is important. I've found the 3 MOA in the tasco gets a lot of glare at night. Even on low power. The original one was 1 MOA.

I looked at a holagraphic a few years ago at a shooting expo. It was perfect. I even showed my bro in law that it didn't deviate from the target even when you looked at it with the dot right over at the edge of the FOV! My first one was almost as good but obviously not up to the recoil.

Can't say that I've heard of .44's being notorious for destroying scopes...

Plenty of common calibres like .270, .308 etc. have more recoil than the .44 and there are millions of people shooting those with no problem.

A bad scope is the issue?

in a rifle set up the 44RM is a puppy..... The problem couldn't be the awesome power and recoil of the rifle.

My American friends who are ex miltary say Aimpoint and Eo Tech are the best optics, they cost more yet last much longer.

Having used Aimpoint Comp and Eo Tech XPS3 i would not buy anything else, the 512 is a bit longer than the XPS and uses AA batteries.

My next sight will probably be Aimpoint the battery life is outstanding.

I've got a Rossi M92 in 44 mag with a 20 inch barrel and I have a mate with the same set up but 16 inch. I've had the same scope and rail for 18 months and never had a single drama but he's been through two different bushnell red dot scopes both around the $150 mark. My guess is the shorter barrel causing the problem

Mine is 18" too. The main reason I purchased mine was it was factory drilled for the scope mount. Ill look into it. Thanks combat.
Baronvonrort. I have never dealt with aim point. I was under the impression they were less quality items. I mean way off EoTech level. Ill google both models and go from there.

Well I'm sold on the xps. Most likely xps2 because the xps3 is suitable with night vision which I don't need. I have a 830 lumen torch mounted under the magazine. The aim point is a daylight dusk dawn site. I need a large sight because 99% of pig encounters are night time and close in tall grass paddocks. Still looking into other aim point models though. Obviously I was wrong about the brand.

I like the Aimpoint Comp M4 if you are looking for a bigger sight, many of my ex military friends in the USA have this on their AR10-AR15's, it is military quality so it will last.

They speak highly of Eo Tech as well so no problems with either of them, i forgot the brands they told me to avoid, they all say these are the 2 best brands

Took my .44 out pigging last night. 2 shots. 2 hits. Mind you 5m isn't exactly testing accuracy.

Aimpoint and trijicon are used a lot here.

Trijicon run on the high side of price, we hunters tend to have a traditional side even though we are allowed to use semi auto type at gun if you show up in a deer camp here you will find bolt actions and lever action type guns.

We don't hunt much in the way of big game at night so the guys that hunt yotes and fox tend to be more liberal and have lots of fun.

On an unrelated topic after landing a Texas heart shot on a sow last weekend I can confirm that the 44 destroys brown dots too
