Is there any reason to shoot 45acp over 9mm in competitions?

No concern for 'stopping power', self defence or anything else.

9mm as I read it is cheaper to shoot, has less recoil, and shoots flatter than 45acp.

45acp wins out in power, and other things irrelevant to punching paper or clanging gongs.

But people still shoot it?

Fun, more trouble, slower times, less score, harder to recover aim, but heaps more fun. Those IPSC who may tout "Major", are kidding you, as 357Sig, and even 38Super beat 45ACP in that regard, but the 45 thrashes them in "fun factor". Cheers

With regards to IPSC, 45 is harder to shoot (more recoil) therefore 9mm is easier and some shooters concider it cheating. That why they have Minimum and Major power factor, to level the field so they can compete together yet separate. Also why dont we shoot IPSC with 32s or 22s? Because we want to shoot guns, its what we like to do. If we kept allow smaller cals eventually we'll only be able to shoot 22s then they'll take them away too. If the anits had their way we'd be running around with nerf guns, then they'll take them off us also. 9mm/38 is minimum for a reason

If you push the velocity up to major power factor then 9mm eats the .45, but it's hard on most 9mm guns.
The .45 is at major even with light loads so it doesn't need to hit as precisely as minor 9mm.
For me, I always considered precision to be a vital part of practical shooting so 9mm minor was all I wanted.

We cannot use 45ACP in NSW for IPSC unfortunately or it'd be much more popular due to being able to achieve major power factor with much less recoil. I've got a few 45's but rarely shoot them since discovering the 10mm although both are grin makers

Essentially, yes. More punch needs less precision, less punch needs more precision. I can't recall ever shooting a match with my mate's 1911 but I did put plenty of ammo through it on private days. I did shoot a revolver match with one of his .357's which was a real hoot.

That's why we go to 38 Super or 357sig for the major loads in IPSC.

45 ACP is .452 inch diameter, 9mm is .354 inch diameter. the slightly larger hole in the paper might just break the scoring to give a higher score.

That answers the question I came in here to ask. I saw a 1911 in 45ACP in Victoria for sale on usedguns.com and I was wondering why he said it was kitted out for ISPC.

We need this in SA.
