T3X SV 223 opinions

G'Day all,

I'm starting out in shooting and I'm interested in a T3x Super Varmint 223 in 1/8 with a 24in barrel. I'm looking at range only, maybe a bit of competitive shooting on the side to test my mettle. Before I make the purchase, I was hoping for some feedback or opinions on that rifle and scope selection. I didn't want to go el-cheapo but also didn't want to spend serious coin just yet.

I was thinking a LEUPOLD VX-3i 4.5-14X40 since I'm keen to push out to 300-400m

Am I on the right track?

You would be thinking of F-Class Standard with the QRA, I presume? I used a 223 in Brisbane at Belmont and the 80gn pills worked well. Not sure if mine wasn't 1:7 though. I used the Sierra Palma bullet and their web site would advise you. it is only when you go past 800 yards that your length of barrel becomes pronlematical. It might not generate enough velocity to maintain good elevation any further out.

As above I have seen people start with a Tikka but if competition is what you really want to do then you would be better off with a Barnard action and a custom barrel either Bartlien or Krieger. Then fit it with a Nighforce BR 42* scope. Then you have what it takes to be competitive.
The other route is a much longer one to arrive at the same place. You will start with the Tikka and after a while will re barrel it. Either next r before the barrel you will have upgraded your scope. Then you will finally give in and get the action.
I have been down this long route with a Remington 700. It is now a very good Rem 700 but still only a Rem 700.

Love mine great rifle have taken mine out to 600m easily with 75g amax's i think they are i have some 80s at home that i haven't tried. I have a burris xtr 2 5-25 ffp scope the pair work perfectly together although the scope cost more than the rifle

300-400m will be a doddle for that with some good pills.

The VX3 is a nice, clear scope too. 14x at 400m is ok, maybe a bit more magnification wouldn't hurt IMO but that's still good.

if your interested in target even at the local SSAA range you would want a 32* scope so you can see your bullet holes. Unless you are shooting on electronic targets. Dont be put off thinking a Nightforce scope is out of the world price you will get a good second hand one for $1000

save yourself $300 and get the varmint model its the same as the super varmint my brother got the super varmint and we cant work out how its a 300 extra for the moveable cheek piece i have the varmint model and it shoots the exact same as his did

You're right, not really hitting the value sweet spot for just a cheek piece is it.

Thats all good but what competition do you enter that is 300 -400 yards. Thats why no matter what you want to do with your gun and how seriously you want to do that it is really good to have a think about the purpose. There are so many people that get into the competitive side of shooting myself included that could of in the long run saved money on buying things that dont fit the purpose. You can always re purpose guns to other things and some you can get away with a bit of a compromise.

I bought a Tikka SV secondhand for $1000 in 223 to practice with at 300 and 500 metres bench rest, fly shoots. I wish it had been my first rifle when I started out. It is challenging reading the wind with the little 80 grain pills. You will need to be able to see your bullet holes, I also recommend the Nightforce 42x BR scope. There is nothing more frustrating than firing a shot and having no idea where it went. My factory Tikka shoots under 3 inches at 500 in calm conditions which won't have you challenging the Stolle actions in 6BR but it isn't embarrassing either. I use a Sinclair forend adapter to get the plastic stock to sit on the front rest and got a Yo Dave trigger spring to lighten the trigger pull. Good luck and please have a go at middle distance shooting, you will enjoy it.

Regarding seeing bullet holes at 200 plus, if you shoot with the NRAA, you will have no trouble but of course, it is Not benchrest. Their F-Class is more like prone br.
