Objective lens size doesn't matter for small zoom?

Post by jackles » 04 Apr 2014, 2:29 pm

As a general rule on objective lens most people seem to say bigger is better.

A particular scope might not be the best choice due weight or other things, but just in terms of clarity and visibility this is a pretty common opinion?

These two scopes though...

Leupold VX-2 1-4x20mm

Bushnell Elite 1.25-4x24mm

Both pretty small, especially the Leupold one.

So objective lens size doesn't matter without zoom then?

The bigger objective gathers more light, but at the range you'd be using a 1-4x it's not an issue.

Putting a big 50mm objective on it you'd just be adding weight for a 1x.

The primary function of the objective lens is to gather light.

The further you're shooting and the worse the conditions the more important this is.

It's easier to see things clearly in poor light the closer they are obviously. As said, with a 1-4x it's not expected that you'll be shooting large distances, so there really is no need for it.

I've used the Leupold 1-4 a few times before.

Really gotta love how light it is.

TBH you don't need whopping great objective lenses anyway.

Quality over quanity...

I'll take a smaller scope with better glass than the other way around, any day...
