When the battery of a digital keypad safe runs outs

Post by sha » 01 Mar 2014, 4:56 pm

Hi all,

Question for anyone with a digital keypad safe.

What's the story when the battery which runs the keypad and remembers the combination runs out?

Do you have to remember to change it at certain intervals to void probs? Or do you get a warning light or something?

Sha.

The one's that I have seen don't loose the combination, it's on a chip inside the pad that doesn't need a battery BUT these one's mean you need to find the emergency key to open the safe as these have the battery inside. Others may be different with the battery behind the keypad maybe.

Test yours with the door open and disconnect the battery.

Yeah, pretty sure the pin is saved into the system in the lock, not held volatile memory that's lost without power.

You can change the battery without losing the pin code.

Otherwise when you unplug the battery to change it you'd lose the code anyway...

My battery's have gone flat 3 times, just take the face off & replace the battery. As the others have said it shouldn't lose it's code. What breed of safe is it?

No particular safe yet Jaso. Just getting my head around everything before I pick one up.

Thanks for the replies all.

Don't forget digital keypad safes will have a key override.

If the chip failed or whatever happened and it did erase your pin you can always open it with the key until you replace the battery or get the pad replaced.

Whatever the problem is with the pad, you can still always open it ;)

Correct, you would be surprised where the key hole is placed on some of them.

Wouldn't be the first forum post where someone had to ask where the keyhole was so they could unlock their new safe

Mine doesn't but the batteries are accessible just next to the keypad.

That's interesting. I was also under the impression that they all had a key override.

Just for arguments sake, if your keypad had some sort of failure and stops working or the code was lost, there is no way you can open your safe?

Guess so, it was a fire proof safe bought from Bunnings about five or six years ago, I think it was around $450 at the time. I'm sure I'd get in there with a power drill and sufficient time, I don't think it's all that well made.

Before you buy a digital combo safe have a look on youtube at how to get into one. You might just have a change of mind.

Some of those cheap little safes are real shockers!

Bit of a love tap on the top and they swing right open.

Never had a problem with gun safes, but I had a laptop safe that suffered from that problem.

I forget the brand, sand...something...

As above though, give it a sharp thump on the top at the time you turn the handle and it would open about 1 in every 10 attempts.

Bad news for anyone actually protecting their valuables with one of these as the thieves are no doubt practised in opening them quickly.

Yeah, I dunno how they're allowed to keep selling those things.

If reckon if you're stuffed got pinched like that you'd have a case with fair trading or whoever for the safe company to replace your stuff due to making a faulty product.

I had a look at the youtube vids about digital safes, mine is far more substantial than the ones shown, it is a struggle for one person to lift, probably about 55Kg, it's a fire proof household safe, seems to be about 50mm of concrete between an inner and outer steel shell.

There are safes and then there are "safes".

Those little office jobbies from bunnies and nothing compared to a half decent gun safe.

I'm quite sure you'll find that any keypad gun safe made by Browning, Buffalo, Spika, Hyskor etc. etc. won't be affected by the knocking open flaw.

Shame they don't really do combination dials any more?

I always thought they were handy.

No key and no batteries to worry about.

This is my attitude now. Had the battery run out on my safe the other day and when I went to open it with the key the lock was stuffed :(. Took me hours to get it open and the new safe now operated off a key only

Maybe the answer is a second safe? (full of course)

Lock yourself out of one, shoot it open from the other?

Mine is keypad with the backup lock.

To be fair the key obviously isn't intended to be used as the regular method of opening, the locked is recessed deeply behind the bad, but yeah....

It's about 15cm or 16cm long from memory
