Sharing safe with other shooter QLD

G'day all,

Pretty sure this is right but double checking with the guys in the know (you).

I'm licensed, rifles registered to my name, currently holding the safe keys.

As long as the misses has a license too, she can use the safe, yes?

Just double checking before I do something stupid

Not 100% on QLD Laws .. But in WA you can only share a safe if you have the exact same rifles licensed to you as the other person, any rifles they have they arent licensed to you, cant be kept in that safe and visa versa

If person 1 has cat B firearms and person 2 has cat A license only, they can not share safe which contains cat B firearms.

That's the way it is in Victoria.

That's how it was explained to me by the dealer at my firearms course.

The way it is in WA is similar to the way it is in ACT, doesn't matter about type, it goes on serial number, you can only use/be in possession of, a firearm that's registered to you, or you are authorised to use, or if you are under instruction of an instructor.

There is an exemption in a gun shop/dealer etc. You can get approved to use another gun ( if you're a junior you can get approval to use a parents gun, farm guns situations, etc, or you want to share a gun with a mate, say for example your wife won't let you have one at home, you can get authorised to use a mates gun.)

Also if you're an instructor you need to be authorised for each gun your club owns in order to instruct with those guns.

I was under the impression as long as you had the right category license it was OK in QLD, same situation as Victoria.

Got me doubting it now with the ACT and WA stuff.

That's my understanding but better safe than sorry.

Dropping QLD weapons licensing an email is probably best.

By the exact same rifles, I mean the same gun ( same serial number ) ... And yep your dead right, its a load of toss.

I actually wrote a letter to the Premier and he got a cop from some branch to ring me and explain it slowly to me

May I suggest that you and the good wife fit trigger locks to the firearms. You and only you hold the keys for yours and the GW hold the keys for hers and keep the bolts locked in separate containers.

By doing that, you both have access to the safe but can't use the firearms.

I thought someone had gotten onto the fuzz about it... But I'll fire an email off ro them to get the final say .. Might take a day or 2 to get back to me though.

Thank you for your inquiry into whether it is legally possible to share a gun safe or only if parties have the same weapon and license category.

Prior to possessing a firearm or having access to a gun safe you must be a licensed firearms holder.

If you are house sharing with your defacto, it is lawful for both of you to use shared gun storage provided: -

Both of you currently hold Firearm Licenses.
Both of you have the same categories on your license.
All of the weapons are lawfully registered and
There are no more than a total of 30 firearms on the premises.

One firearm can not be registered in the name of two persons.

In simple terms the licence provides legal authority for the licensee to possess any registered firearm of the category their licence is endorsed for.

No unlicensed or unauthorised person must be able to access the gun safe at any time.
