410 Reloading

Does any one reload 410 shotgun shells ? Having trouble finding a press for sale in Australia.
Is it cost effective? Information will be much appreciated.

once setup it probably would be cost effective as the shells are a bit more expensive than 12 gauge to buy

it all depends on how much you are going to use it

you could also go the lee hand die set if you are just trying to keep the cost down a bit

if it were an occasional shooter I would not bother, my daughter has a double and I dont reload for it as it may only get shot a couple of times a year
she is always grabbing my 12 gauge

At the clay club - ppl don’t reload for 12g or 410 due to the fact that the factory loads are so cheap and your not really improving accuracy nor consistency.
The club also gets offered local discounts which pushes reloading out of the picture. Last case I purchased at the club (250 shells) was $85 for no 7’s so I imagine 410’s wouldn’t be more than $100. If you have a local clay club - ask them, they will sell to non members. I don’t know the breakdown for reloading 410 - primers, cases, powder, wad, lead...and time and equipment might push it beyond the realms of positive accounting.

My old man loaded them for a few years for me when i was a young takker...

He has taken a big fancy to sport shooting with 410 in his old years, & so got himself a nice little double a few yrs ago that he easily drops the odd bunny & quail with...(he's a good shotgunner).

He has also got his grandson (my nephew) shootin my old single 410 shotty now, so he does a good bit of handloading with his ancient lee hand & hammer kit.

The old fuddy duddy gets satisfaction out of it, & says its cheaper--but then he has left over shot from many moons ago...

Id love a 410 lever & press set up...just for gits & shiggles...would be great fun & a good way of honing ones skills on pigeons fyling out of farm sheds.

If you can buy .410” ammo that cheap I wonder why everyone else is so expensive? I reload for my .410 with 3” shells. I am thinking of selling the whole lot as I just do not use it much these days. I load, sg, slugs and shot. Pretty versatile little cannon.

I doubt you'll find .410 birdshot much under a buck apiece, even buying slabs.

I've started using fire formed .303 shells for my old Mossberg bolt action.410. Though I have a Lee hand loader kit for .410, the only thing you need for brass shells is a decapping pin, a primer punch to install them and a small hammer.

I talked with a bloke that has a mountain of .303 blank brass, he was going to run a few hundred through the tumbler for me to use as shotshells but he hasn't been back to me about it, I'll have to chase him up.

9.3x74r are the go for 3" shell's....and I don't do anything different to noisydad re reloading plastic shell's...

Well, I was completely wrong...yep it happens.
Some of the kids are paying $195 a slab of 410 and I assume that’s a discount rate to keep them in the club. Wow. I thought they’d only be a fraction more exy than 12g - learnt something today.
