Suggestions for rimfire scope

Post by JimTom » 21 Jul 2019, 8:26 am

G’day Gents

I am looking at a new scope for my .22LR.
Leupold VX Freedom 3-9x40 or the Bushnell 3-9x40 rimfire.
Obviously the Leupold is a bit dearer, circa $350 compared to $250 respectively. Hoping to spend somewhere around $400 or less.
Anyone have any pros or cons for either of these or any other suggestions?
The rifle is a Lithgow and is used for a bit of plinking at the range, and the odd bunny.
Any suggestions sincerely appreciated.
Cheers :drinks:

Burris 3-9 rimfire

Cheap but of reasonable quality

Have a couple spare

I use a Bushnell Custom 22 scope, 4x18. It is 44 years old and as good as the day I bought it. It has a fine crosshair which suits target work and is small, light and unobtrusive which makes it great to carry in the field. I don't know if a modern equivalent is available but I would not hesitate to buy another if they are, Cheers.

Thanks Kelsey Cooter. Don’t think you can go wrong with a Leupold.

Vortex diamondbacks(4-12x40) are reasonably cheap and have decent glass - but they have very average eye relied, making them well suited to .22 as well. They retail around 420 but I’ve seen them for 200+
Tikka .260 (custom)
Steyr Pro Varmint .223
CZ455 .22 & Norinco .22
ATA 686 U/O 12g & Baikal S/S 12g.

I’ve got the Leupold 3-9 x 40 on my Savage 22, and a Vortex 3-9 x 40 on my Ruger 22 mag. Have used the 22 with the Leupold more, but can’t complain about either one and would find them hard to split really. Vortex was maybe $40-$50 cheaper is all.

If youre mostly doing range stuff...what about higher mag scope...should be able to get something sort of half reasonable for that money with bigger mag... :unknown:

If only doing the occasional bunny can always wind it back...& bigger mag means you can challenge yourself with long range rimfire targets... :unknown:

Im a fan of having the option of bigger magnification on a scope as well...

Iv had a few different scopes on my .22lr

My favorite scope for it (hunting & plinking) is the
Leupold FX-3 6x42mm ... I especially like the warm fuzzy feeling it gave me buying it from one of those round eyed western countries.

I'venever felt the need for a variable powered scope on a .22lr and the 6x seems to be the right balance.

The retical is perfect for the .22lr especially if you like reaching out to 100m. Those 2 milldots are pretty handy.

I run the Leupold vx freedom on a Ruger american rim fire 22" 22lr. Its a great little tack driver and the markings on the scope are great. I zero at 50 and the main cross hair is dead on from 25-75m shooting cci mini mags. Then at 100m i just drop down to the first large hash mark and i'm bang on and then to the bottom of the cross hair where it transitions to the thicker line to reach 200m. Being able to hit a steel bowling pin silhouette at 200m with relative repetition.

Any good optic built for a riimfire (with parallax set at 50 or 75m ) or a scope with an adjustable parallax side focus are ideal candidates.
The Burris rimfire scope is great as is the Hawke Vantage range of scopes with the calibrated rimfire reticles ....and lots more out there.....
