Where should I buy a new a scope?

Post by AussieTimmeh » 26 May 2014, 2:13 pm

Hi all,

I am looking at buying a Trijicon AccuPoint 5-20x50 or a Sightron SIII scope for my .308 and wonder who you guys recommend to buy through. Our LGS seem to be a bit more expensive than most but it's convenient I guess.

Are there any good retailers in Aus that you recommend? Do you need an import license to buy from the US? Do the scopes cop a hammering in the post?

Any help is appreciated!

I'm pretty sure the trijicon will be ITAR restricted so you won't be able to bring one in yourself without permits. My advice would be email Horsley Park and Abelas in Sydney. The difference in price and hassle between them and the local stores will make the trip worthwhile

Also check out a guy called bonzerimports on eBay. I was looking at a high end leupold scope from him and it was $500 cheaper than aussie prices and postage and import duties are included in his prices

Thanks. I emailed the two shops you mention and it seems like the crosshair reticle version of the Trijicon I am after is not brought in by the importer, so I'll need to go for a mildot scope if I buy in Aus. I wonder if this guy can get the standard crosshair version. I'll check it out.

If you're looking to use your 308 for long range the Mil dot reticle could be handy. Gotta learn to use it though and have the scope adjust in mils not MOA

Got my Bushnell 6500 from Magnum Sports in Roseville.

They had the best price of a dozen places I tried at the time. Including Ebay...

I haven't bought from these guys but checked the site frequently a while ago.

They had some good prices at the time.

Never bought off these guys but their prices are awesome. I asked them a couple questions about a scope I was interested in a while back and they were helpful and quick

Having dealt with the shops in the local area that Tim's looking at I can say one is an absolute rip off merchant and the other one is a good bloke but his prices are out of line. I'm all for supporting local shops if they do the right thing by you but shops in our area take the piss cos there's not enough local competition to worry them.

Lol, they are definitely more expensive than Sydney shops but I have grown to expect that here.

Obligatory mod reminder here before it's said...

Following comments like "absolute rip off merchant" best not to name the merchant on the forum, as saying mean things publicly can lead to angry emails which no one likes to field.

Use the PM system if you must know.

Carry on gents.

(no dramas, just a friendly reminder)

Cheers mate. Wouldn't have been silly enough to use names on a public forum though

Tim, PM if you wanna know which shop is which :)

You would think that if people wanted to sell things that they list, that they would return your messages. Oh well, I'll just buy the exact one I want new instead even if it costs a bit more. I suppose it gives me a bit of protection in case something goes wrong.
