My New Long Range (For Me At Least) Target

Just set up a 12"x18" AR500 Steel Target on m Dads property. It's about 660 yards (603 meters) out. At least that's what my GPS tells me. It took myself and two friends to get it situated properly. Thus far out of about 80 rounds, there have been only 4 hits. The rifles used have been a Savage Model 10 ( a friends rifle) and a custom AR15 biuld. My friends Savage FCP McMillan (with a Nightforce 3-24 50mm scope) was the best equipt to hit it, as such is responsible for 3 of the 4 hits. The AR only 1 (got lucky). Tried a Saiga 7.62x39 but I did not expect it to hit (it didn't). Tried a Mossberg MVP that did not hit either but probably not the rifles fault.

One problem I see already is that since it is not a proper range, there really is no dirt around it. What I mean is that you can't see where your misses are hitting so that you can adjust. At a proper range, you shoot and you can see a poof of dust from where your bullets are hittings which tell you to adjust up, down, left or right. These bullets are not giving any kid of report at all. This is my first try shooting at these distances so if anyone has any feedback I am all ears. I can't be the first person to have this problem. Either way, I think if I keep at is I will find the right pattern, it will just cost me quite a bit more in lead.

Yup! Maybe build a wall of sand bags behind the target. Sure is easier doing long range shooting when someone can call your fall of shot. The fun of hearing those gongs clang never gets old!

Shooting across that terrain you are going to have a lot of drift perhaps with wind or at least wind draft from thermals even on a windless day which is not going to help keeping your shots on target. Maybe try a huge sheet of white paper, cardboard or whatever you can transport and put that or a number of them behind the target until you get your settings and wind reading better.

Perhaps half your distance and get on target, matbe closer the work out. Use something like the JBM Trajectory Calculator to work out your ballistics and scope settings which will give you both Inches and MOA adjustments over your target range for each calibre and velocity. Hope you have a Chrony to get your velocity figures. Works for me setting up out as far as 500 metres so far, 800 metres yet to be tested. Every calibre I have tried at the Range for 100m, 200m and 300m have been spot on within less than an inch firing the first shot at a different range distance.

Best of luck, looks an interesting location and like you should be able to find a closer distance along that ridge to the righthand side if not somewhere else.

I thought of making it closer but I'd have to knock down trees. I placed the target on a natural rock outcrop that has few tress on purpose. If I tried it anywhere else, once the leaves come back (which they are), I wouldn't be able to see the target anywhere closer. But this is stil a work in progress, Things may change,

The pea shooter is a Ruger LCP 380. Not exactly a fun gun to shoot, rarely makes it out to the range. But I love it anyway. I backpack\hike with it and I carry it when I travel outside of New York. I am permitted to carry in about 36 states, but in my home state I am only permitted to use it for hiking, hunting and target. It is an outstanding pocket gun.

The Glock and the Ruger Single Six make it out to the range almost every time. Followed by my Beretta 45 and Colt 45.

Who knows what goes on in these peoples minds? I just wanted as few restrictions on my permit as possible. In NYS you are required to show reasonable cause for having what they call an "Unrestricted Permit" but they do give permits for other limited purposes.

When I first got my permit I was denied an unrestricted by the Judge. She then asked if I hunt or go to ranges. I said yes, so she granted me a restricted permit. Her tone however was that I was lucky to get even that.

About a year later my friend showed me his permit, he had Hunting, Target, Hiking and Camping on his permit. So, I requested an amendment to my permit (at a cost of $91) to get Camping and Hiking added to mine. Judge only granted the Hiking.

I also have a Utah and Florida permit. With reciprocity laws between states I am able to carry in other states which don't impose limits as to when you can carry.

It won't be much. We're starting with an old unused camcorder (in case our aim is not as good as we think! ) and sending the video using the video out port on the camcorder to a monitor running on an inverter with a battery. Once we get it working, I'll post some pics.
