Ruger 357 Carbine switch barrel

Dropped my Ruger 357 with a spare Tikka t3x 25-06 barrel off at the gunsmiths this week.

Short video of testing some 70gr HP to confirm mag function and feeding.

It Works

Should work fine lol, the gunsmith will take half a thou off the 357 barrel thread and place a grub screw set up on the underside of the action for quick barrel swap action.

So the gunsmith called yesterday and a new 256 Win mag chamber has been cut and the rifle is ready to be picked up, happydays

first to chance to checkout the new switch barrel conversion today. 25-06 chamber got chopped and the 256 Win mag reamer run in. Barrel came up at 18.5inch so the same as the 357, small bit of weight loss of 50gr, slight thinner profile forward of the chamber.

M4 grub screw set up for quick barrel change. Looking forward to a range session now later in the week, fingers crossed she shoots OK.....

Barrels threads have been done to allow unscrewing by hand, Grub screw keeps it from unintentional unscrewing.

yep Homer the Gunsmith has already done it , told me not to lose the barrel, same as losing a gun !

Damn Covid, been 2 years since the Ruger had seen sun light, anyway no 158gr pills anywhere local so I grabbed some 140gr FTXs.

Shot along side the some Magtech 158gr ammo the FTX sure did tighten the group up (middle 3 groups, chrono'd at 1930-1980fps). Only loaded up 9 bullets with 3 diff charges and about 10% under max load ( alliant data) Power Pro 300 MP, Federal Nickel brass and Rem 7.5. I'll do some reloading in the NY but I should be able to nudge 2100fps with the 140gr FTX and have a safe load

I pulled the Flex tips from the FTX so I could stick some more powder in the boiler room, this also got the projectiles closer to the lands which helped the accuracy immensly

140gr FTX at 2157fps was the top speed with no major pressure signs, but the best bit is the 4mm group at 50m from the Ruger Carbine, and that for me is the high light for shooting in 2021

I'll start with some foxes when the grass burns off, might even get Fallow duties this coming rut.

Going to load up some Speer 158gr when they turn up, if I can get decent accuracy and speed Ill replace the FTXs

Yeah Bladeracer it was showing only 3 shot moa potential but then all of sudden when pushed harder I found a real wide node at 3 diff charge weights, shot a 4mm, 7mm and another 7mm 3 shot group.

I'd be more than happy with that out of any of my high-velocity hunting rifles, but you got that out a bloody .357 Magnum, amazing stuff!
