Australia ratifies the Arms Trade Treaty

Post by MeccaOz » 04 Jun 2014, 3:25 am

The Australian Government will today ratify the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) at the United Nations.

The Arms Trade Treaty will be the first legally binding instrument ever negotiated in the United Nations to establish common standards for the international transfer of conventional arms.

Illegally traded conventional weapons are one of the world's biggest killers, claiming more than half a million victims every year.

Experience in Australia’s neighbourhood, such as Bougainville in the 1980s and the Solomon Islands in the 1990s shows how destabilising the introduction of even small numbers of illicit weapons can be.

Australia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Gary Quinlan, will formally deposit with the United Nations today, Australia’s instrument of ratification of the ATT at the UN in New York.

Australia’s ratification of the ATT comes one year after we signed the Treaty. One hundred and seventeen other nations have now signed the ATT. The treaty will enter into force 90 days after 50 countries have ratified it.

Australia is one of the seven co-authors of the original 2006 General Assembly Resolution calling for an Arms Trade Treaty culminating in the ATT’s adoption on 2 April 2013. This major foreign policy achievement for Australia reflects strong recognition of the need to better regulate the conventional arms trade and to reduce the impact of armed violence on communities around the world.

Drawing on our own strong arms export control expertise, Australia will offer practical assistance to help others implement the ATT. This includes a further $1 million to the UN Trust Facility for Supporting Co-operation on Arms Regulation (UNSCAR) which we helped establish with a $1 million contribution in 2013.

I dunno. Does the US give a s**t about this stuff really?

Sign the paper to look good, then just sell the guns out the back door anyway?

Sounds like same old political lip service?

Think they pretty much do what they want in terms of arms and their military regardless of what the world says...

Does it mean much for Australia to be signing this thing?

Surely we're not much of a player in selling arms internationally?

The US and European countries must make 1000x what Australia makes?

Not yet, But I have heard it will be a start to banning private firearm ownership by the UN, I mean the way the pollies have played the media bias it's not a huge step. Well here in Australia anyways

The u.n wants all arms transactions tracked and reported to them Europe is already doing it guess who get to pay for it.
Over half the guns here have never been on paper and many don't have numbers to track with and you won't get half of the population to register them.
I have my great grand fathers colt army 38 from turn of the century besides the receipt he got for it there has never been a peace. Of paper to track it in any way

And the longer you guys can keep it that way, the better mate ! I was reading last night That Obama will have BATF running a gun registry by june the 14th ... A bit optimistic I think but he will have the groundwork done :( . And remember what they did in New York They got everyone to register by saying "It's nothing, it's just a piece of paper that costs $5", and you can see how that turned out.

Dont be too sure about that, your great leader has declared that he will use Presi Exec orders to get stuff 'done' democracy shemocracy....

We are already seeing the implementation of international trade restrictions in the USA, try getting something out of there without 'state dept approval'

Its Gun control by stealth, the US will be the last to implement a registration system (the internal part of this international arms BS, it may cause a civil war, that a cynic would suggest the US Feds have been preparing for such an event for several years now (Billions of rounds of ammo here and there, APCs on the street, all gov departments arming up) in the words of a phamous kiwi philosopher; "It wont hippen over night but it will hippen"

With regard to Aussies driving this treaty - "Drawing on our own strong arms export control expertise" what a joke, its easy to strongly regulate zero trade ... except of course for our 'own' Lithgowet (thats French for Lithgow) production, although I'm not sure of any contracts other than ADF, contract clauses probably allow those f90s out of Aus without issue...

Oh and our stock of SLRs, lets not mention sending them over to those civilised PNGns, where else were they sent?

Congress has to ratifi it and right now he could not get a grocery bill passed even dems are pissed right now he just broke the law with this prisoner swap.

Even the dems no for every thing he does the next president can do the same on other things and presidential orders can not over ride a law a data base system would brake the law and he cant get a budget passed to build one .

Many of his presidential orders will be rescinded by the next president they all hate it both sides do it.

He is a lame duck President and very unpopular right now and it won't get better before his term is up for him.

Most went to Indonesia, my Pop was a bit upset by it as he felt they should have gone into storage, he remembered our lack of rifles in 1942 and the extremes we had to go to to arm ourselves.

How does the quote go...something like - those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it...

Disposing of our surplus small arms was/is treasonous. I wasnt aware of them going to the Indons, WTF??

But this idea that we will never need to defend our country again is phenomenally stupid, like after the 'Great' war, oh we'll never do that again, 20 years later we had to rename that the First World War didnt we..... we've been in continuous conflict since!
