220 swift

Post by MeccaOz » 26 May 2014, 1:56 pm

Ok so I have a .22 ( Well I borrow the old mans a lot  ) a .357 lever and a 308 on the way ... But I'm talking myself into needing a more powerful 22 . Like a 222 or 223 .... BUT I'm thinking I want a 220 swift just for something different.

Seems Ruger has dropped most of their 220 Swift offerings but it's available in one of their single shots. Remington offers a couple as well, hell If it's something I want I'll build one if I have to.

Anyone have experience with them or thoughts ? Before anyone yells out get a 22-250 I did have one at one stage But the rifle was a dog and NEVER shot straight ( That's my story and I'm sticking to it ).

one thing concerns me about your choice and thats quotes like this one

"Traditionalists have roundly condemned it as an overbore "barrel burner" which can wear out a chromoly barrel in as few as 200–300 rounds, especially if long strings of shots are fired from an increasingly hot barrel"

maybe the swift is one cartridge that belongs in this thread viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1854 LOL

why not look for an older sako chambered in 6BR, they're a slow twist to suit light varmint bullets or even a 6PPC,

a .220 swift will push a 35gr bullet at around 4400fps

a .204 ruger will push a a 34rg bullet at around 4200fps but has a better BC so will shoot flatter

a .22BR would push a 40gr bullet at 3900fps, should outlast both the swift and .204 ruger by a factor of 2X

a .220 swift will push a 60gr bullet at around 3600fps

a .223 will push a 60gr bullet at 3100fps but will outlast the swift by a factor of 5X (assuming the correct twist barrel is used)

a .22BR will launch a 60gr bullet

a .243 will push a 60gr bullet at 3700fps and should outlast the swift by a factor of 2X

a 6BR pushing a 60gr at around 3600fps (assuming a slow twist barrel is used)

there are many options, but you should consider all the factors

Yeah everything I've read says they are a barrel burner, but most of the hardcore users say it's alot better with todays metallurgy .. But I'd still burn a barrel our quicker than most I'm assuming mate.

I guess to me it's just an old calibre I've read a lot about and basically already bought in my mind, if that makes any sense. But you have opened me up to a few a good choices there.

Any reason you went the 204 road?

i didn't choose the .204R, it chose me

i was looking for a centerfire for my wife and the .204 came up, it's a second hand CZ 527 classic and the price was right, i would have bought the rifle even if it was a .223 but the reality is the .204R will be more forgiving should we misjudge the range of a fox or rabbit beyond 100m

i was impressed with the .204 straight away with it shooting hornady 32gr Vmax factory ammo at around 1 3/4" at 200m on the first outing and the same ammo in 40gr about 2" at 200m

some handloading had it shooting 32gr vmax under 1" at 200y for 3 shots and the barnes varmint grenades at around 1 1/2" at 200m for 5 shots (shot by my wife at the last mudgee meetup shoot during load testing)

LOL, you have to love that Chronos. Honestly the reason I hadnt really put the 204 on the short list is because I havent seen one in action or one at all ( small town ) really. But I dare say from what Im reading it is on the short list of small calibers Im considering :)

Righto. After reading the replies in here and the linked thread, I'm guessing it's redundant to start a thread on the "224 Weatherby Mag".

Bummer about the Swift.

My old man's cousin had a Sako 220 Swift when they were young blokes. From the stories, sounds like it was an awesome bit of gear. Except for that home adjusted hair trigger. Reckoned a light breeze would set it off.

We've got the hole in the farmhouse floor to prove it too!

LOL I have an uncle who occidentally shot out his roof with a .243 , which he still owns 30 years later. I dunno if it would be redundant or not as to the .224 Weatherby. Personally I'd still love a 220 swift but I think a rifle around that caliber would see alot of use, so I may just go more mainstream and later on do a build of a more off the track ( but extremely useful ) caliber.

Yeah. The Swift is right up my to do list aswell. Could get a 22-250, or 204. But where's the fun in that? Or maybe I'm just a tragic for an oddball/obsolete cartridge. If you find a .218 Bee for sale, let me know! Ha :D

There's both a .218 bee and a .220 swift on used guns ATM. The swift is a new ruger mod 1 I think. Now that would be different. Lol

I've got a 220, it's a great round. You can load 55gr or down to the 40gr.
I've had mine for nearly 20 years. It a ruger m77 mk2 with a timney trigger and a heavy stainless barrel. Great accuracy out to 250-300. I dont go further than that.
There are so many caliber choices it's not surprising ruger are slowing production on this one. 22/250, 223, 204 to name a few. Even the 222 has fallen off the map a bit.
If the upside is fast pills then the downside is throat erosion. Dial it back a little and find a happy medium. I don't think the bunny can tell if he's being hit with a pill travelling at 4400fps or 4000fps.

Good luck with your choice.

You've got me inspired to run a "survey" on the weekend. I'll leave the 223 at home and take the 220 with some 40gr rounds I've got.

Cheers

Hows the choice coming along, dont go mainstream.... there's always the 225 Win... or the 5.6x57 which should have something on the swift..
