The $50 rifle

Went to one of the gun shops as I needed a bag of dog food,as I walked past I seen this old banger of a rifle, I only picked it out as I seen the CMC logo. I politely asked the gentleman.... "Whats that old thing mate" he explained it was a like for like .223 barrel stuffed doesnt have time to fix etc. so I sais "how much?".... "$50"...... "I'll take it" .

So I will see what happens with it, first thing it needs a good clean, second thing, Im going to mount a spare scope and see just how bad he reckons the barrel is on it. most likely however if it shoots ok ish, I'll throw a little red dot on it, bed the action, load some game kings and have it in the ute. Will also make a great spare for someone to borrow. if the barrel is completely toast, well that's easy, maybe another .222 magnum but a sporter, or maybe a little .221 fireball, who knows, either way I think I will leave the stock, it's got plenty of patina. Tells a story.

The old mans 270 from 1974 is a good old CMC mountaineer, still has original barrel and still shoots like a dream, he can knock chain links off the post from 220m still no dramas. Countless rounds down the tube, so could be optimistic about that barrel, might just need a bit of a recrown

If it shoots ok i would re-finish the stock. Checkering looks fuked, so just sand it out.

Id love to find a gun shop that sells these kind of things they always seem to have at least a $500 tag on them. I really enjoyed my last project rifle wouldn't mind another.

Or if its just ok, maybe use it as a plinker...load it up with trsilboss & the cheapest bullets you can & use as a youngsters beginner gun..

If you need to re-barrel...what about a 17 or 20 cal...(?)...

And im with azza...its a shame dealers feel the need to load up the profit on these clapped out old rifles...
Its a good thing that dealer sold it as is to give someone a chance at a good project.

Alot of the dealers that I've looked at wont let you patch a rifle. My 222 when i picked it up had a heap of carbon and fouling asked to patch out and was told that's a no go. When i patched it out i found pitting and the first two inches of the barrel washed out. I haven't found any dealers, brisbane wide atleast that have labeled a rifle as great but the barrels clearly stuffed. And with at least a $600 price tag.

Yeah unless the bore is squeaky clean don't buy unless you anticipate fixing the usual issues like worn components and barrels that haven't been serviced correctly or in some cases, at all.

Well it's already paid the $50 worth back, when I bought the other CMC, the firing pin is very loose in the hole of the body of the bolt, it was cratering primers, but the bolt that came with this rifle is shmicko, so scored a bolt straight up, gave it a clean and it looks like the last 2 inches of the barrel is a little pitted, will give it a shot this coming weekend and see how it performs, but hey so far, for $50 i cannot complain.

Exactly right stix, Ill use it for a plinker for the time if the barrel is stuffed, things are going to get a bit tight with this stupid virus I think, people in Townsville are panic buying as everywhere and people from my work are being self isolated at the moment after returning to the country. Suppliers for steel and parts are also feeling it too.

$50 rifle got a bed job to suite it it was quick and simple, I might as well give it a gooda chance to shoot as I can. Got a box of some factory Federal ammo so will give it a crack this weekend.

Mate if I could have a whole cabinet full of CMC rifles I would but they are never for sale when im ready to buy, wouldn't mind one I can convert to 17rem
