Do we need nrl?

Post by Blr243 » 10 Apr 2020, 1:05 pm

There’s a bit of talk on telly this morning....I’m guessing they want to continue for financial reasons ... I would be happy to can it for now. But I’m only looking at it from my perspective..... But there could be people saying I should stay home too because we don’t need carpenters .... what do you think?

I'm a fan and would love to see it on. Obviously if they can do it safely. It would give a bit of normality back to life and give people something to look forward to each week.

NRL is rugby league , popular Australian sport .... a southern Aussie rules devotee may also ask WHAT IS NRL as if to pretend that nothing other than Aussie rules is worth watching .....I don’t mind either But don’t follow them much. I most often have to ask someone in the know how the teams are firing

Being New South Welshman, if there's one thing I look forward to, it's the start of the NRL season.

Other than needing to distract the simple masses from the real goings on we don't need sport for anything,

If we do get rid of it, we might have less chance of future Peter Fitzsimmons types emerging which can only be a good thing, f*** that guy is sycophant piece of s**t

Yes it should return as soon as possible. They do 4-5 minute match reviews on Facebook, which I enjoy. Don't have the time to watch whole matches.

Sport is a very good thing. The stuff that gets televised though is business, not sport.

No such thing as nrl in Tas...all we hear about it down here, is another bunch of over paid gym junkies got together punched out or raped another woman...
but I agree with blade - most sports are now big business and have lost their souls...remember day night cricket before huge $$$$? It was an Australian ritual, but now, after the pressure/cheating/money, I can’t watch it...

Funny you say that Tassie...wasnt the one day int's/day night series brought in by packer that we loved as kids, seeing lillie front the Paki's & marsh's bat hurtling down the pitch, equally disliked in its time for the change to what cricket was before that...

But...i agree with you entirely...im not interested in that sport anymore...not at all...id rather the nrl, or even netball to cricket.

Yes, there is a certain amount of hypocrisy in my post - but even knowing that and with the passing of time - no doubt memories are embellished but...I think I phones and internet in general has changed our lives so much...if I asked one of my kids to watch a game of afl or cricket, they couldn’t do it without a phone in their hands...
I don’t see the younger generation playing sport like we did growing up...it’s there but it’s...different.

Although I am a NRL fan it is good to see these blokes brought back down to earth. It would seem they are not classed essential workers. Rugby League today doesn’t have the same appeal to me and definitely not of the same class as it was in the 80’s and 90’s.

I hope it’s canned temporarily in the interests of safety for the population It’s a contact sport that involves border crossings ....if the players don’t want to get fat they can still jog every day .

Les Boyd was a favourite of mine from that era. A man who definitely suffered from white line fever. As others have said, this pandemic has demonstrated what occupations are actually essential. I dont mind sport, but I think the NRL are being quite optimistic about there re-start date.

Ah Les Boyd, played for Manly in the 80’s if my memory serves me correctly. Along with Noel CrusherCleal, and Graeme wombat Eadie.

Les Boyd was an expert at 'facials' and 'lacings' among other things but the ever more intrusive TV cameras brought that era to en end.
The uncontested play the ball and the 'fake news' scrum have ruined the game to the extent now that the team that can keep the largest number of 120+ kilo players regularly on the field wins.
Its now as much fun as watching WWE.

Happy for all professional sports salaries to be capped at 150k.

They are playing games people.

Hard to see how these blokes command such huge salaries. Whilst I do appreciate they possess a certain amount of skill to play their chosen code of footy, it does seem a little extreme in some cases. Still it is what it is and I guess there is a lot of money in sport although it is a small percentage of what some sportsmen in the USA get paid.

You get paid based on your economic output. These players generate a lot of economic activity and successful players draw more people and economic activity in.

I don't begrudge these players what they earn as statistically careers only last 3-4 years for most players, their bodies take a physical hammering and after their career they usually have to get an education or trade or business going to make a living. Especially for the NRL, unless you are a star player with a long career, you are not coming out of the career with tons of riches.

Don't really follow it anymore. Not since the demise of the North Sydney Bears. Now there was a team that could lose with dignity.

I remember watching Les trying to start a brawl after the game ended. Legend. A man for whom the biff was a way of life.

They certainly had a lot of opportunities to do that. Years ago Alex Buzo wrote a satirical book on tautology. One of the tautologies he quoted was “Norths played badly”. Harsh.
